Liberals and Islam

Re: Liberals and Islam

Bill Maher is not a representation of all liberals…just like a few radicals are not a representation of all Muslims.

Why would you do exactly what’s being done to you?

How is that even intelligent?

Re: Liberals and Islam

Couldn’t agree more. Bill Maher is an entertainer. He is on the right side (right here meaning correct side) on some issues - legalization of matijuana, probably supports a fair minimum wage, and probably is against unnecessary wars, support green living - drives a Prius (but had a motorcade escort him from one show to another because of tight schedule - which is counter to his supposed green lifestyle), supports equality for all including gays, is for universal healthcare

He is on the correct side probably 75 pct. Which is not bad. Actually it’s pretty good. He gets carried away - as in this case.

Re: Liberals and Islam

So you guys agree that he IS generalizing it to all Muslims. Just like the conservative commentators. And that is exactly my point. It does not matter which side of the political spectrum they are, their sentiments towards Muslims is same. To the specific point he raised about apostasy laws, I don’t think all 1 billion of us believe it. In fact, we had a debate on this site not too long ago about it. Heck it is not even a core tenet of Islam. To portray it as if it is, is pretty dumb.

The only reason Bill Maher is singled out here is because, liberals tend to use him to draw a contrast with guys like Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity etc.

Re: Liberals and Islam

Its immaterial if Bill Maher is a true liberal. Just that he is on the other side of the political spectrum from Limbaugh et al. The point I am trying to make here is, if Muslims want to have a say in policy & political matters related to them, we cannot count on either conservatives or liberals. We need to build ourselves up enough to be influential.

Re: Liberals and Islam

I will vote for you man if you get that pothole fixed in front of my house.

But yea muslim need some political platform in america and most importantly a tolerant one.

Re: Liberals and Islam

Stating any group including Muslims need to unite to have a platform is different from drawing the erroneous conclusion that liberals would have the stance Bill Maher has. Too often in this site I have seen this confusion.

If you want to hear opinions of a true liberal, tune in to Bill Moyers show on Sundays. Or listen to Bernie Sanders. Or Naomi Chomsky. Or go to dailykos.com

Liberals such as Affleck and Reza have railed against Maher. It is ironical that Reza was sort of slammed for not being Islamic enough.

In any country - be it Pak India US - liberals comprise less than 10 pct of population. Most pride themselves as being in the center. That dreaded term Moderates.

Re: Liberals and Islam

Noam Chomsky is an anarchist…just a correction.

Re: Liberals and Islam

What does that mean?

Re: Liberals and Islam

A mixture of liberalist and socialist…basically an anarchist picks up and applies the best of both ideologies.

Re: Liberals and Islam

Ok. Anarchist sounds like a trouble maker. But what you have described is good.

I should have added the late Howard Zinn among the liberals. Michael Moore also.
