Re: Liabilities of being a Muslim at WORPLACE

Dumb questions that never end, no matter how much you explain the answer.

Re: Liabilities of being a Muslim at WORPLACE

i dont personally know if i’m at all a liability :konfused:

however, there are times when they all go out for dinners and what not and i choose not to go… but Iv’e already said it to them plain and simple that due to religous requirements in terms of diet, i cant come. Besides, they all sit there consuming alcohol and we ain’t allowed to be near that stuff. No one complains.

Subhanallah I work with really nice ppl, and they all seem to like me too (or they pretend to :D)

Re: Liabilities of being a Muslim at WORPLACE

I have always been treated very well at all the different places I have worked. At one of my workplace, my coworkers and supervisors even made sure they don't eat in front of me out of respect during Ramzan time. When I was leaving that place, I was literally given 5 farewells. My brother used to say that they are trying to convince you not to leave...lol.. At another workplace when my supervisor found out that I am a Muslim and fasting, she personally came to me and said if I need to take any time off for end of Ramzan celebrations, I should feel free to do so. Also, they understood I don't eat everything and therefore they always had alternatives for me.
There are always people who discriminate, give others hard time, with me I ignore all such people that came in my way and continued giving my best. I was appreciated a lot not only for my work but for my personality and character as well.

Re: Liabilities of being a Muslim at WORPLACE

Never had it been a liability.

I was allowed to take breaks for prayer and nobody ever saw any problem with that. In fact some people would admire the spirituality aspect. (whatever that means)

I cannot forget the farewells and the nice cards i reeived with everyone's messages.

Actually i think of the question as a liitle silly also, we are all humans, no matter what religion. A little bit of difference in eating doesen't make us aliens. Plus who would mind if we take a break for something, like prayer only takes 2 minutes.

Re: Liabilities of being a Muslim at WORPLACE

Alhamdulillah the fact that I am a practicing muslim doesn't affect my work relationships - either with colleagues or customers.

My work colleagues are exceptionally accomodating of things like time off for Eid, me working as and when I please (literally) during Ramzan - well I come in after sehri and leave earlier in the day - in return, I but chocolates/buiscuits and send a thankyou email when I return after Eid.

They didn't bat an eyelid when I began wearing the hijaab, they accomodate my dietary requirements at meetings/away days, and accept that I won't go to xmas parties as I don't feel comfortable around those who are drinking.

Our customers abnd suppliers always think and at at key times when they give bottles of wine as presents they always get me a box of no alcohol chocs from Thorntons.

Being muslim isn't like being disabled or anything where adaptations have to be made in the workplace - therefore we aren't a liability!

It's just a case of accepting others beliefs and customs. Those who discriminate are the minority you'll find.
