this discipline of poetry is rare now. at one tine, it used to be a part of Ghazal goii. poets would read a rubaa’ii [quatrain] before reading the Ghazal.
a rubaa’ii is a 4 liner…more like a qit’a…with three misr’as having qawaafii while the third misr’a is devoid of the qaafiya. the difference between a qit’a and a rubaa’ii is that rubaa’ii is said in a particular bahr and vazan while qit’a can be in any bahr and vazan. also, qit’a has a particular theme, dealing with mysteries of life on this planet earth and the life here after.’
let’s get going…lemme share one of the rubaa’iis of my Dad:

tadbeer na taqdeer kii ta’beer, yahaaN
haiN maut o Hayaat Khowaab donoN, lekin

yuN ba-zaahir to maiN nahiiN bataa saktaa k yeh kia hai…qawaafii ko madd-e-nazar rakhte huye, Jaun Eliya waalii to rubaa’ii lagtii hai jab k Akhtar saaHab waalaa qit’a…

ek pahchaan to yeh hai k qit’a muzakkar hai aur rubaa’ii muannas!**
rubaa’iiyaat search kar leN…sabhii ustaad sho’araa ne rubaa’iyaat kahii haiN.
sookhaa huaa pattaa jou giraa daali sey
ik parda uthaa zeest ki paamaali sey
chaa jaati hai jis waqt baaharoun pey khizaan
roney ki sadaa aati hey hariyaali sey
Qita. It is an Arabic word and means part, section. According to structure qita looks like ghazal. But qita has more socio-political, moral and educational content. Works of G. Burhaneddin, İ. Nasimi, M. Fuzuli, etc. are in this genre.
Rubai. It is poem genre in total, consisting of four hemistiches and having more social, philosophical content. Ruba is written in hajaz bahr of aruz rhythm. When we say rubai, as a rule, we recall the great eastern classic poet Omar Khayyam (X century).

yeh raah-e-hazaar_saalah kab tai hogii
**
nai = baaNsurii/flute
tashaKhKhus = mumtaaz hastii/munfarid hastii/unique personality
zohd = taqwa/piety
