I think what you have stumbled across is a real phenomenon of let's say touchy topics.
They could be touchy because they involve some sort of chess like strategy to be employed. In this mindset people are likely to present real situations as if they are merely hypothetical. But in actual fact they are not.
They are presented as so to protect themselves from undue criticism or out of a sense of prudence but could also be a way a true seeking soul will express themselves without giving too much detail away and thus uncovering too much dirt.
It also means they are looking for guidelines and not specific answers.
I maintain that this done mostly unintentionally and when it is done in this way it will help others who are in similar situations. Or it is phrased with looseness in order to prompt the analogy of other peoples experiences to surface. By making the discourse too specific it may be harder for people to know that their own experiences and mechanisms of solving the problems is being asked.
It is a thus a way to turn the specific case into a general case and it could help out more than just the thread opener.
I do not think it is a matter of hiding anything. Such threads phrased in such ways also attract more replies and people want to help, phrased other ways it could appear to be more of a statement than a plea for help.
