"Let there be no compulsion in religion"

Allah says in the Quran: “…let there be no compulsion in religion…”

Then why was Abu Sufyan (r) forced to become a Muslim by Abbas (r), who threatened him with loosing his head if he did not testify that “There is no god except Allah and Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.”?

And apparently all this happened in the presence of the Prophet (s), who did not intervene.

I read this on a website yesterday and it’s been bothering me. Is this story true?

Another hadith which comes to mind is the Prophet (s) saying something like “I have been sent with the sword so that God alone is worshipped.”

Wouldn’t that also contradict the quote from the Quran?

What’s the correct interpretation of this hadith.

How do we determine which hadith is authentic and which is not?

When the prophet conquered Mecca and came with his Army from Medina, he forgave everybody who had persecuted the Muslims earlier. He didn't force anyone to accept Islam, infact he said everybody who stays in Abu Sufyan's house is free from harm. Please correct me if I am wrong, this is what I remember.

As for the hadith you mention, I have never heard of it. Only Sahih Muslim and Sahih Bukhari hadith are authentic.

The 4 major schools of thought agree that Sahih Bukhari and Sahih Muslim are considered authentic while the other hadith are considered zaeef (weak). Otherwise would you believe in every hadith floating around?

I've never heard so much ignorant nonsense in all my life! Can you quote even a single scholar from any of the four schools of thought (i assume you mean Hanafi, Maliki, Shafi'i, Hanbali) to support your false view that we take only from Bukhari and Muslim and that all "other hadith are considered zaeef (weak)"??? Just one scholar please.

I really doubt that is the case. Because to check the authenticity of hadith you have to know 'asool ul hadith'. That is what I know.
