let mukhtar mai remain mai

[font=‘Bookman Old Style’] I do not remember the name of the book and the name of a person mentioned therein but what I do remember is that it is a very famous book and its reference is given so often. It covers era of pre-partition. In the book a chapter mentions that when agitation against English rulers took momentum in order to control it the English appointed a very well known Sikh elder as a local/district ruler in some area of [font=‘Bookman Old Style’]Punjab[font=‘Bookman Old Style’]. This move was same as in order to overcome the growing frustrations amongst public we appoint sometime people like Begum Rana Liaquat Ali and sometime Hakim Saeed to take advantage of their public respect. That elder Sikh was a real human being and philonthrophist. When he took over going through roads he faced “Down Down Murdabad” anti protests against him. One day a reporter asked him “Sir, just for a salary of Rs. 2000 from English rulers you have labeled yourself as Murdadbad from the same very people who in the evening come to your Baithek (big guest sitting room in old houses) seeking your help and you spend more than Rs. 4000 helping them financially and socially. The reply is worth written in gold. He replied “Son, as a government authority/local ruler when I pass through the market in government car, traffic police keeps ordinary traffic away from me and reaching office when a DSP opening my car door salutes me, the Nasha that brings this can not be obtained even with a full bottle in the night”. I had a friend who was a Doctor and a real doctor. He was a Major in uniform. He had full humanity always 24 hours ready to serve whoever knocks at his door or phones him even in late nights. He used to say praying 5 times he was never so afraid of than when he comes to office and Security Guards salute him with Guns in hands he trembles and prays God to keep him safe from any self pride.

**[font=‘Bookman Old Style’]These modern press conferences, receptions, photographs in press, TV interviews, have though slow a poisonous effect on good qualities of a human being. In 2nd half of 1960s I have personally seen the kind nice simple rather very simple respected Edhi when he had a small office in Kharadar. Since early 1970s I have not personally seen him but I have seen him in media addressing this elite club and that, chief guest here and speaking there. The result is our today’s respected Edhi infected by these media glare has the heart to say he knew trouble makers had prepared a list to kill people (when Hakim Saeed was murdered) and that in case they did not stop in their devil design he would go to London. Sometime says he would shift to [font=‘Bookman Old Style’]India[font=‘Bookman Old Style’]. In 1960s this Edhi could not even have thought of it. It is just like Tahirul Qadri saying proposals for [font=‘Bookman Old Style’]Pakistan[font=‘Bookman Old Style’]’s betterment is in his brief case. However Qadri did not open his brief case in the larger interest of people of [font=‘Bookman Old Style’]Pakistan[font=‘Bookman Old Style’] waiting perhaps some Tarar exchanging his this brief case with some other briefcases. Mukhtar Mai went through a trauma when she was gang raped in presence of whole village which she would never ever in life forget. It is said if a thief comes to a house the psychological fear never ends. A rape victim medical experts say meets the same feeling who rest of the life. This totally illiterate woman showed her courage. Time and circumstances helped her. So called social workers, human right activists, women organizations, NGOs etc all are racing with each other by taking this illiterate innocent really courageous women to press conferences, to offices of elite here and there which would bring nothing to Mai I am afraid except for more “blessings” from abroad for these activists and NGOs themselves. For God sake leave Mai to her noble job and let her concentrate in her village school. Do not politicized her. Do let he start feeling she is a VIP which feeling will kill her God given real beauty of her heart. If she could spread the light of education in her village and could give real education to children of her village this would be the best justice she could ever wish rather than getting the accused re-arrested and re-trialed. **
