Over the last year or so after a lot of searching for the one laptop that suits me and the one cell phone that suits me, i am happy to announce that i have found both. A Lenovo T430s and a Google Nexus 4.
This post is about my Lenovo.
** First moti moti specs: **
8 GB RAM (expandable to 16)
Intel i7 processor (four cores)
180 GB Solid State Drive
USB 3.0 ports
** My requirements:**
Run all my software, basic hobby audio / video editing, run 3-4 virtual machines simultaneously on VMware Workstation, carry it around with me anywhere and everywhere. Oh and that lil red joystick type tracking device that comes standard in most lenovos ![]()
My love for this laptop may be a bit biased because i have always been a big time Thinkpad fan. But this one has just quadrupled my love for thinkpads
Why i love this laptop:
SSD
This laptop came with a SSD as its primary hard drive. I had never used SSD’s before and this one has opened my eyes. It turns out you can have superfastic CPU and tons of RAM but if you have a sucky hard drive everything will still be slow. I routinely create and destroy virtual machines running Windows servers. They install in 1/7th the time it takes on a spinning hard drive. The laptop itself running Windows 7 restarts in 15 seconds flat. Love it.
What’s even awesomer is that i can run virtual machines (windows servers) with 1 GB ram each and still not feel a major speed difference. The SSD compensates for everything else that lacks in speed.

mSATA slot
So next to the RAM slots there is an mSATA slot. Which means i can plug in a second hard drive in there. I went out and got myself a Crucial 256 GB mSATA SSD. My total HDD capacity now is about 450 GB. This is sufficient to house my everyday data. For ISO’s and other large files i carry around an external USB 3.0 hard drive in my laptop bag which houses all my large data.

Chiclet Keyboard
Looooove the chiclet keyboard design! How did i ever live without it? Keys are slim, robust and super quiet.
Trackpad
I don’t use the trackpad at all. I dont like the idea of scratching my fingers on the surface endlessly. I prefer to use the trackpoint (the mini joystick) but in the past when i did that my hand would rub against the trackpad and cause unwanted mouse movements. The trackpad on this one is smart enough to know when it is being touched by a finger and when it has the weight of a hand on it. Very hee smart.
Weight
The SSD makes the laptop super light. Which makes for awesome portability. My shoulder thanks it.
Heat
No spinning hard drive = no unnecessary sound and heat
** How much does it cost?**
If you buy straight from Lenovo, the one i have can set you back around $1700. I got mine off kijiji brand new for $900. I asked the guy if it was stolen and he confirmed it is not, said he has a supplier who gets it in direct from china. He sold it to me for $900 but later realized he couldve done better. This model is still going for $1100 on kijiji.
