Do you folks know/have left-handed kids? At what age did it become obvious?
Re: Lefthandedness
My older son is and we noticed when he started to pickup spoon to feed himself.
Re: Lefthandedness
My husband is left handed but I don't think it was ever a problem for him
actually is it a problem? cz i know some people (not necessarily desi/Muslim) believed that being left-handed was a bad thing.

They think it is bad to be left handed because They quote that it is sunnat to use your right hand for all your daily activities except one. That being said anything being sunnat does not necessarily make it mandatory on everyone. If is it some religious ritual where right hand is supposed to be used , then you are under obligation to use your right hand. ( but I cannot think of any).
If you love Holy Prophet(SAW) and you do every thing the way he did due to your love for him(SAW) including use of right hand ,then as per some narrations you will be rewarded by Allah(SWT).
Re: Lefthandedness
Oh. so do parents usulaly try to stop their kids from being lefthanded?

Never seen anybody doing so in my friends and my family.
Re: Lefthandedness
I have read that it doesn't settle until they are 2.
My husband and father are both left-handed. Abu always insists that Bunny favors her left hand, but I haven't noticed it either way.
As for how lefthanded kids are raised, traditionally they are trained to eat with their right hands (as the left is culturally considered dirty), but many (like Abbu and hubby) still write with their left hands.
Re: Lefthandedness
When they start coloring and eating by themselves.
Re: Lefthandedness
my daughter's doc said that she is left handed when he was examining her because she will taking things from his hand with full force from left hand. However , she is 20 months now masha allah I have seen her using both right and left hands and I am still unsure if she is left handed or not. Last night she was eating with left hand and just sometime before that she was eating with right hand. I dont think it can become obvious until they really start writing or eating.
Re: Lefthandedness
my brother is left handed and I heard my parents were concerned about it and they even went to consult a doctor who strictly told that it is his right brain that is developed better and we cannot force anyone for being right/left handed. He tries to remember to use right hand while eating. SADLY some maulvee told him that he cannot cut the goats on eid ul adha since he is left handed
and he never told us about it until last year when my husband (who becomes a pakka qasaii on eid ul adha
) offered my brother to do it and he disclosed that it will be ‘gunah’ for him. stupid maulvee !! and now he is all into it ! ![]()

These kind of people are known as scatter brains , not lefties. :D

I’m lefthanded , write and all with my left hand but when it comes to performing surgeries I subconsciously switch to my right hand. In fact , I never realized I was operating with my right hand until one of the anaesthetist’s pointed it out during a surgery

Re: Lefthandedness
Your supposed to beat them untill they start using their right hand.
Re: Lefthandedness
^ hahaha....so funny.
we have a couple of lefties in the family......
brother does everything with his left except eat.
niece does everything with her left hand.....including eating....much to the disdain of all the right-handed folks.
brother is eldest so I don't know when ammi figured it out for him but we noticed in the niece when she started to pick things up, particulary crayons........probably around the age of 9 months or so....
Re: Lefthandedness
I am lefty and both of my kids are lefty too. It became obvious when kids started picking up toys and started using color with their left hand.
I shake right hand
I eat with right hand (when I m eating by fingers) and left when I m using spoon.
I use left hand while writing, picking up things etc
I just feel that my left hand has more stability, better grip and more power than right hand.
Re: Lefthandedness
Sheyn brings up a very good point. There is nothing wrong/evil with being left handed. However, generally, there are some things that are limiting for left handed people. Surgeons and their tools are typically right hand oriented so a lot of training is done as if you are right handed.
A lot of sports equipment has to be specifically bought separately for left handed people and can be harder to find and more expensive. A sport like polo is very hard on a left handed person because the horses are trained to go as much as they can to the left of the ball to enable the player to hit the ball with the right hand.
Also, it's not just our culture but even old Roman Catholics believe that being left handed is evil. In fact, in Italian, the word for "Left" is "Sinistro", the same root word for "Sinister", cool, eh?
Re: Lefthandedness
I'm left handed, I write and eat with my left hand, shake hands and use scissors lol with the right.
My mum says it;s because when I was 5 I broke my right wrist and so started using my left for eating and writing. I don't know.
I have had some relatives lecture me on eating with my left hand, one such lecture occured quite recently rolling eyes I'm in my 20s.
I don't see anything wrong with eating my left hand, I have heard that it's discouraged in Islam cos the left hand is supposed to be used to washing yourself after using the toilet...lol...not sure how true this is but I keep my hands very clean so no issue!
