Left handed or right handed?

When do you figure out whether your child is left handed or right? I mean by which age should it become crystal clear? Also i know some left handed adults who eat with their right hands and i have also heard that a child who is left handed shouldnt be encouraged to use his right for it can effect the hand and eye coordination and in turn the nervous system. My daughter is turning two this july.I usually encourage her to use her right hand for eating, but she appears to have some trouble and just when i am convinced that she is left handed and leave her to her own devices she starts using her right hand for eating. So what should i do?

Re: Left handed or right handed?

well, maybe she's still too young to know for sure. Just make sure to enforce eating with the right hand and cleaning with the left, even if she's a lefty and let everything else run its natural course. don't worry too much about it.

But if you do make a lefty learn to write with the right hand, they can later on become ambidextrous which is cool :D

Re: Left handed or right handed?

I think if she's left handed she'll want to use her left hand to eat. I'm left handed and that's what I used to do. :) Don't let her be left handed, we(well most!) have horrible handwriting!!

Re: Left handed or right handed?

DOn't change how she is naturally. You'll know by age 2-3 when they are holding crayons to draw. Regarding eating, you can teach her to eat with the right hand as she grows older. 2 of my nieces are left handed. They write beautifully as that is what comes naturally to them. But they have been trained to eat with their right hand, and that's about the only thing they do with their right hand.

my daughter was left hand in the begining i have to teach her to eat with right hand it was dificult for her but now it's normal but she write with left and have such a beautifull hand writing

Re: Left handed or right handed?

My eldest and my youngest are lefties. And yes, it became clear between age 2-3. You're supposed to let them choose which hand to write and draw with because they will naturally choose the hand that works better for the task. All 3 of my boys did some switching until they settled into it and by 3 years old they were all set. Its not a good thing to force right-handedness esp for writing. as far as eating, I'm not overly concerned about it - as long as they eat and dont make too much of a mess I'm just happy that they're eating lol!

thanx for the replies ladies.
so it appears it wont harm her even if she is left handed to eat with her right hand. I dont impose it upon her, just sort of remind her twice or thrice to eat with her right hand. Hopefully it will become clear which hand she is going to settle on.

When my child started eating solids I noticed then what hand she preferred using, but it wasn’t until she started writing that I was certain.

My child and I are both left-handed and we both eat using our right hands. But read below:

“This applies if one is able to eat with the right hand. But if one is unable to do so, there is no sin in that. Al-Nawawi said in Sharh Muslim (13/191): The objection to eating and drinking with the left hand applies so long as there is no excuse. If there is an excuse which prevents one from eating and drinking with the right hand because of sickness, injury etc, then it is not makrooh.”
