Lecturership in Pakistan

Is it possible to land a lecturership position at a Pakistani University with a MA/MSc from a Western University. I am thinking here about social sciences like International Relations / Political Science.

What’s the odds of that?

Re: Lecturership in Pakistan

yes... very much so - it shouldn't be that hard to get into the smaller colleges... but better Unis such as QAU, LUMS etc. would still ask for a completed doctorate. That being said, it really depends on how many years of experience the person brings post-degree, and I have seen people teaching at the big Unis with only a masters degree. Often they're not recognized as "Lecturers" but just as "Instructors".

Re: Lecturership in Pakistan

I think it is very likely...try sending your CV and an extensive letter to some universities and colleges. You can find their contact info through their websites and google. My husband got numerous offers to come in to talk to them and even got salary offers by email. They were practically begging him! He has the same background in social sciences (economics/poli sci/IR/public admin). Good luck.

Re: Lecturership in Pakistan

I am scheduled to start my MA in Sept, if Allah malik grants me life, but after that, insha-allah , I wouldnt mind a stint teaching in Pakistan.

I checked the QAU defence studies website, and some of there staff do not appear to have PhD's.

Whats a typical salary for such a post? 20,000 Rp/month?

Re: Lecturership in Pakistan

lbg, another avenue (which is actually more lucrative) is to go thru HEC (higher education commission). As you might have heard, they are working on a very aggressive campaign to hire foreign faculty with decent salaries (100,000 to 300,000 rupees per month). However, that assumes that you have some teaching experience already at a foreign college or university. In your case, it means that after you are done with your masters, you should start teaching at a british college first, and then apply thru HEC. The advantage is that you deal only with one entity (HEC) and then no matter which university you are placed at (whether small or large) your pay could still be in excess of 100,000. Beware of the fact that HEC advertises a Phd requirement, but after contacting them personally, I found they were very accomodating even with a Masters. The only issue with Masters is that you will be on the lower end of the 100,000 - 300,000 salary range.

I agree with Ruiner and Umar that most univ. are pleasently very quick and accomodating, and even offers could be made via email. However, nothing beats an in-person meeting, even if its just a casual visit rather than an interview. So do that first, and then inshallah with other conditions met, you will also be receiving offers in the email as well.

Re: Lecturership in Pakistan

So far as my knowledge of Pakistan goes, even 100,000 /month is a good income, correct?

I start the MA this sept, insha-allah, and it'll be many many years before I pursue a PhD (If I ever do), so I hope teaching in Pak is possible with an MA,

Can someone "sticky" this thread, as I'm sure others entertain dreams of teaching/making a difference in there motherland too.

Re: Lecturership in Pakistan

100,000 is good.

Re: Lecturership in Pakistan

What does that buy in Pak?

Re: Lecturership in Pakistan

100,000 rupees is equivalent to 2500 pounds in uk or 3500 dollars in usa per month.
so u can have same standard of living in 100 000 rupees as with 2500 pounds in uk.
I hope it helps. and in pakistan tax deduction is very less as compared to UK.

Re: Lecturership in Pakistan

I emailed the HEC, asking if someone can get a job via them with a MA, I got a reply saying:

"HEC looks for foreign PhD holders with 5 year experience".

Thats a life time away for me. :(

Is there another way?

Re: Lecturership in Pakistan

Salam ,

You can find a very good position in a Pakistani university with a masters degree from abroad. You starting salary can be Rs 50K (even more) if you have a little bit of experience. That experience can be from anything besides teaching.

In fact, most universities have a shortage of qualified faculty. So just apply to the good universities. As somebody mentioned you would be better off if you have some experience first.

I can assure you, a foreign degree is no match for any of the Pakistani degrees and Universities do realize that in Pakistan. Universities also try to take the lead by marketing that they have foreign qualified faculty. So do give it a try!

Hope the info helps.
