Every day, I see a deluge of secretaries, finance people and other workers leaving at 3 or 4. Hard to get a secretary here after 4.
Can someone explain to me … Did I miss out on some news flashgrowing up? I thought the work day ends at 5???
It's called flex hours. These people start earlier and leave earlier. In my own office, the core work hours are 8:30 am- 5pm (which excluding lunch and breaks means we have to account for 7.5 hours each day in our time system). But, if you've got a decent reporting manager, they're willing to make concessions and may let you come in earlier and leave accordingly.
I myself am not a morning person - hence, I get into work between 9 and 9:15 and leave between 5:30 and 6pm.
And yes, having a secretary/admin who works the same hours as you is are rare as a panda - they exist but are not too plentiful.
As for finance people - as soon as the markets close (at 4pm), there is a mass stampede of the folks leaving work.

I have flex hours, I work from 8:30 to 4:30 so that I can pick my daughter up before 5:00. Some people in my office work from 7:00 to 3:00.

Work for some good , well reputed and financially strong corporation and you will not have to complain.

Same in my office. Standard is 8:30 - 5:00 pm, however management is very flexible. As long as you pu tin your hours you can come in 6, 7..whatever time. Sometimes you can even leave early, as long as you have taken care of your projects & responsibilities. Plus we may take off early once in a while, but usually work late more often so it balances out.....usually we're putting in more than we're taking out though...hmm
