Learning to stitch ...... years later!

Hello everyone

I first learnt how to stitch a shalwar kameez when I was 16, then a few years back I reacquainted myself with it, but never really did it on a daily basis.

Now, I want to make my own clothes as the tailors in england are still out of my reach as an unemployed person, so …need help.

  1. Anyone have a template for a trouser
  2. Anyone recommend a good sewing machine for basic stitching in the UK

Any other advice most welcome

Re: Learning to stitch ...... years later!

I'm sure Hareem can help you with both these things but I don't know where she has disappeared to.

My mum was seriously into her sewing and bought a Janome machine. What sort of trousers do you need a template for? My mum makes all her own to wear with kameez's.

Re: Learning to stitch … years later!

There are hardly any templates/patterns for desi clothes but you can find plenty of patterns in Vogue, Simplicity, McCall, Kwik and others and can adjust or modify them. But I suggest you take few sewing classes for learning to read and use the patterns. You can also find some free patterns on BurdaStyle or alternatively you can order it online, they’re cheaper than other brands. http://www.burdastyle.com/patterns

you can buy the patterns online or purchase them in your local fabric shops or even in John Lewis.

I have a Janome sewing machine which my teacher recommended for beginners, it costs around 120 to 150, I wish to buy a good one for £300-400 later on. You can also visit a sewing machine store and look for 2nd hand sewing machines.

For patterns you have another choice which is tracing paper. You can buy tracing paper and draw your patterns by using your shalwar kameez etc.

Salam stoppit…i need to cover children’s syllabus in next 6 months so just don’t get any time to post so i just come and look at some threads without logging in.

Re: Learning to stitch ...... years later!

I would recommend a basic 2nd machine for any one wanting to get in to his. There is a lot to learn and it requires regular practice and dedication. There's no point spending a lot of money when you may lose interest. You will need to buy decent scissors for cutting fabrics and stuff as well.

I would learn some hand stitching too, stuff like invisible hemming.

Re: Learning to stitch … years later!

Stoppit mentioned the scissors so I’ll advice these 3 types to buy (recommended by my teacher of course).

  1. paper scissors to cut patterns
  2. small but sharp scissors to cut threads

  3. and these heavy ones for cutting the fabric. http://i00.i.aliimg.com/photo/v0/108591668/Sewing_Scissors_tailor_Scissors_Dressmaker_Shears_Fabric.jpg
