Learning to become a cook

Uff, I hate these stupid Aunties, that come around boasting about what their daughters can cook and what not. Why must society dictate when I should learn to cook, I’ve got enough on my plate (pun not intended) Mom has had me slaving in the kitchen all day today as a result of that smelly Aunty (she should get her daughters to wash her clothes and buy her a deodorant too), she was giving the lecture that to be a good wife you must learn how to cook properly. I just told her I’d get takeout, the easiest option, y’know a buy one get one free deal he he, that just angered her more… oh well at least I found it funny! I make great round roti’s now although I must admit when I started out bout a year ago my roti’s always looked weird, I swear one of them looked like Italy!!I can make great Chicken Masala, but I wanna take stuff at my pace! Anyway, girls do you have put up with this pressure too?

Re: Learning to become a cook

maliaka, learning how to cook is a skill that helps us to be more independent, women and men alike. Don't take it as a wives' duty but as a individual talent, a knack that will help you the rest of your life regardless of your lifestyle.

It also helps to cook something that no one else in your family cooks, you know just to get the bragging rights.

Re: Learning to become a cook

I know you’re right ahmadjee, but that woman drives me nuts. You know I’m great at cooking English food, the little kiddies in the family love all the cakes and stuff I make, but that isn’t aloo gobi, therefore it isn’t good enough!! It’s just that woman, she annoys, I’ve cooled down now. Ain’t as angry as I was early in the morning!!

PS: The Daal i made in the morning was great, My Dad loved, its a great compliment. I know Daal seems like it's be easy to make, but i actually find it harder than some other stuff.

Re: Learning to become a cook

I agree with Ahmadjee, cooking is a life skill try to learn whilst still young.
Maliaka, as for the auntie women... if you knew how to cook, these type of women would find somehing else defficient in you...dont let it worry you.

Re: Learning to become a cook

Malaika dont worry... aunties will always have somethign to criticize, sometimes I feel sorry that my mother has nothign to show off, no beautiful, smart, talented wonderful daughters, just me! But I love to cook....

Re: Learning to become a cook

I agree that our people place too much emphasis on a woman serving her man. Cooking is just one of the ways in which she has to be trained. It's great to know how to cook as Ahmadjee pointed out for both men and women. Both of my brothers are great cooks and even teach my mom new recipes. I always enjoyed trying new ideas out in the kitchen. But it wasn't until i got married that I learned traditional Pakistani meals. I don't think of it as necessarily a duty as a wife. But it's an expression of my love for him and our kids. I made my own baby food from fresh ingredients. i wanted the best for Safia. And Sara516...are you saying you're not beautiful, smart or talented?Aaah..that's not true.
