I’m looking to learn how to speak Arabic. I have a common problem. I can read it ,understand a few words but tht’s abt it.. I want to learn how to converse.
I was wondering if there were tapes/Cds that anybody has tried that could help me learn.

Go for some interactive computer learning system.
You will find many of them on the web. Just search "Arabic Tutor" on google or your favorite search engine.

Cooldude, I learnt to speak fluently 3 foreign languages so far (currently learning Urdu/Hindi in addition..), so I have this way: I try to listen to language as much as I can, for example music (CDs), TV programs (cable TV), films (cable TV, DVD) in addition I do some basic practice with teaching book+CD (I have teach yourself books for Urdu/Hindi and they’re good)…see modern technology make it easy to learn foreign languages
The key to success is to learn a little everyday without thinking about it. I mean if you’re a fan of sports try to watcht your favourite sport on an Arabic TV, and if you love music by some Arabic music, so that you’ll combine your favourite hobby with language practice!
But don’t forget the written practice (books, newspapers), reading is the easiest way to acquire a rich vocabulary which is in turn the key to fluent speaking.

The most important thing about learning a new language is, that once you have at least a decent basic vocabulary, you should try to improve it by using the language as much as possible, ie talk with native speakers, read newspapers, watch TV programs in that language.
I for example had learned French for 3 years, but after completing university I never used it so I forgot most of it. :(

do it the way babies do. Learn new words everyday. Apparently you only need about thousand words (the most common words) in total to learn to speak and understand another language.

one of the schools here in london,s charging £250 for about 12 lessons, a bit too much for me at the moment lol

I was in UAE for about 9 years , I never interacted with arab kids and now I regert that I never had achance to learn arbi. arbi is a language that is in quran majeed and if you learn arbi then you have this other benefit of understanding quran majeed. Try to interact and make friends with people of arab countires, e.g egypt, yeman, iraq, sudan. They are nice people and will help you learn the language. good luck !
