Learning German

hi guys, i wanna learn some german… plz anyone give me some useful tips..some software, intenret site, or anything else?

There are plenty of sites. Just type "learn german" on Yahoo search.

Is the reason you want to learn German because you reside in Germany? Just curious.

i read this the other day

"Life is too short to learn german"

I agree with the above statement

I think that might be an over-statement. If you work hard on it, you can learn it. I myself didn't have any difficulties in learning German, because I grew up with it.

But I have to admit, that people coming in to Germany or Austria at a later age find it though, because it really is a language that is very hard to learn, especially its grammar. My dad has been here in Austria for more than 30 years now and sometimes (very occasionaly) he still puts complicated sentences in a gramatically incorrect form.

Phir mujhai correct karna parta hai. :D

Umer I am trying to learn the languages of the world here, its soo hard but I'm getting there :D

Yup, listen to the others.. try a search, there are many websites out there. I will post some links to get you started later. Really, though, you're gonna learn nothing by websites alone. Pick up a good book, one with tapes preferably. Find someone that already speaks german. If you're serious about learning start checking out german language websites (news or whatever) once you know a little. There are a few german online radios too if your comp can handle it.. but beware cos germans have no taste in music :p

Like Umer said, it can be hard, but it's nothing to be afraid of.. Me? I don't bother with grammar.. I just push my way through with things sounding like a 2 year old :D While there are many Germans that know english and are overly friendly, there are many that think you should be speaking their language properly if you are in their land (and theyre right..). You can probably get by easily with a broad but incomplete knowledge of the language, but if you plan on being in the middle of a lot of formal affairs, learn proper german.

Off track: I think GS needs a separate forum for language learning! Think about it.. this is a Pakistani board being run in mostly english with members all around the world. How many people are there that don't speak urdu here. They can be helped. How many people speak a language other than english or urdu? It can be like a trade for some.. he helps her learn urdu/english, she helps him learn _____? There are guppies from all over the world here, it would be easy!

NAZI!

Exactually!! I came to Austria when I was 15 .. didn't speak a word of german. Had to start from the very beginning. But 4 years later I completed my AHS-Matura (A-Levels) !!

I must admit it was very hard work, today I won't have the power and strenght to do it over again, but back then it was my main aim in life.

You were 15 when you came here? I didn’t know that.

Guppies, believe me, I have talked with Saadia in German quite a few times and she’s absolutely fluent.

simply cute… gama you are very cute sa bacha

umer bhai  german bolne wale to ase hi kahe gay na

I tried learning German and I continue trying to but I find it darn hard. I have learnt the alphabet but the grammar threw me totally off. Perhaps it wouldnt be so hard if I had Germans around. Then I would be forced to speak German and I'd learn from my mistakes.

Essential German Phrases

here’s a lil something for u to start with :flower1:

Nichts in Leben ist hart zu lernen. Die deutsche Sprache kann mit etwas harter Arbeit gelernt werden. Ich habe Mine während in Universität gelernt. Ich habe ein paar deutsche Freunde gehabt und sie haben mich oft angeregt. Es ist eine harte Sprache zu lernen

but watch i will get back to you once i get hold of german :)

:k: ich habe kopfschmertzen after reading dein post :smash:

I love German! I can't speak it fluently but I can say a few phrases here and there. First of all, get a German English dictionary. :)

If you really want to learn German, fully apply yourself and are willing to put up with those days that you find the whole situation very frustrating, I think you will be fine.

SaadiaB sounds like a wonderful example of someone with no previous German who has been able to successfully master the language.

A very good friend of mine is currently doing his PhD in European Law at a university in Germany. He's from England and went to Germany not speaking/understanding a single word of German. He's been there for a year now, has picked up on the language and speaks if fairly fluently.
