How do you think politics work even at not so third world countries? You been born as a self-made leader to rule a part of this planet?! Ahmadinejads are born in Iran not capitalist countries like US of A.
And then If you dont have the connections and the approach you cannot enjoy the heights.
Re: U.S. Presidential Primary Watch 2008
John Major was a bus conductor who later became the prime minister of UK.
there are examples of US congressmen who come from very modest backgrounds
Bill Clinton did not come from a rich connected family and did it all on his own.
Obama who is a major force right now is a son of an immigrant of very modest means
so err yeah I do think there are many self made leaders.
u build the connections and approach. Sometimes political parties look at ppl and try to involve them.
third world countries..i mean there you have dynastic politics as teh rule and not the exception..whether its India with teh gandhis, Pakistan with the bhuttos, jatois, mazaris, etc, or bangladesh with their own version of that. forget middle east which is all monrachy for the most part.

Well afterall Obamas father who died later in a car accident studied at Harvard...Bill Clintons father had some automobile business, I dont think he had a "middle class family relations".
John Major was an exception...but the rest of all those political candidates have some back ground the Bloombergs, Gullianiss, McCains, Kerrys, etc....do you agree??
Btw there is no third world country anymore. You call them developing countries.

Bill Clinton's father was a travelling salesman, when he died Bill Clinton stayed with his grandparents while his mother studied to become a nurse. Grand parents had a grocery store, thats pretty middle class.
John edwards father worked as a worker in a mill and his mother worked as a us postal worker.
Denis Hastert, former house speaker grew up in a family where he worked at his parents diner as a cook.
Ronald Reagen came from very modest background as well, his family lived in second floor apartments above some general store, he often referred to it in his speeches
Thatcher was the daughter of a guy who owned two grocery shops
Guilianis father was a small time crook who served time in jail
the previous NY mayor mario cuomo was born to a family that owned a corner shop
former pennsylvania governer tom ridge, later homeland security director..was born to a traveling salesman.
so it seems like there are quite a few people who did not come from backgrounds like bloomberg.
Re: U.S. Presidential Primary Watch 2008
Obama can really use some Protien Shakes he looks so frail as if he would colapse f

According to Obama's biography, his grandfather was a servant in the house of some colonial official, while his father grew up herding goats in some Kenyan village during his school days...sure he went on to become a Harvard graduate, but that was through his own hard work, not because he was born with a silver spoon in his mouth.
Bloomberg's father was bookkeeper at a dairy farm.
McCain's father was a US naval officer.
Of the people you mentioned, John Kerry is probably the only one who had an upper-class upbringing in a politically-connected family...

Re: U.S. Presidential Primary Watch 2008
it was on the topic until ali sahab got all politically disenfrenchised etc.
suggest we move everything from post 90-97 and then 99 to a diff thread to keep this thread sane.

Yaar kaisi baatein kar rahe ho aap log.
A bookkeeper in these times was much respected and had good income.
A son of a US naval officer....thats nothing?!
Bill Clintons stepfather had automobile business (regardless of what he did personally) and he loved his son. Therefore he had financial backing and dont tell me doing automobile business at these times was nothing worth.
Re: leaders background sicussion- split from primary watch thread
still middle class, upper middle maybe.
book keeper had good income just like an accountant has now, but still upper middle class, not the elite in any way.
still leaves Obama, guiliani, reagen, hastert, edwards, ridge, cuomo etc as just some examples of major political figures who came from very modest backgrounds. Nixon could not even go to harvard because while he was admitted he did not have money to go even after a scholarship. thatcher and major we have already covered. even Tony Blair's father was a university lecturer.

Re: leaders background sicussion- split from primary watch thread
Yes JayR, the whole system is designed against YOU!
Re: leaders background sicussion- split from primary watch thread
A president is just a puppet of the elite. Since he is elected in a democratic process, he only has to be a guy with the natural chrisma to score, a good salesman, a good ladies man, a good BSer; and I don't mean just talk the talk and walk the walk, I mean look the looks too (George Washington with his bad teeth couldn't get elected as president today). Someone who can make the public fall for that he is doing is for them, when in fact, he is really serving the interests of the elite.
But the formula of makings of presidents has been almost the same. You make it to Harvard or Yale law school and start making connections. When American oil companies were dealing with Azeri government for oil contracts, it was "If you want a contract, put my son thru Harvard." All presidents have been members of the Council on Foreign Relations, if that tells you something.
whoa hold up jack..
lemme see
natural charisma - oh yeah check baby
good salesman- err hello..check
good ladies man- lets just say check and not go into details
Good BS'er- aa haan-- you got it girlfriend..snap snap snap
look the looks- tall, fit, ..check
education- top 10 school, yeah..check
council on foriegn relations- check
extra bonus
Masonic Lodge- check
damn it....why was I not born here, i coulda been the next president :(
in other good news, both GOP and dems are courting me right now to join their party. holding out so far..like and dislike aspects of both.
I guess i should just start my political career.
PS: and I have no problem being a puppet of the elite..see hear me sing, see me dance.."Bye Bye Bye"

not so bluntly man, not so bluntly..

Ok, this "President" thing is just not working out. We have all been under this delusion for nearly 300 years that we should elect a good politician, and really all we have gotten is car salesmen and a little charisma. Now if the country had not become a world leading economy during that 300 years, you might think that the system had really screwed up. Or, if we had years of violent military coups followed by years of dictators, where other potential leaders were suicide bombed into oblivion, then you might think that we had screwed up somewhere.
But the proof is sort of in the pudding isn't it?
Foreigners may not like our system, we may have some minority that is discontent with the current President or his policies, but you really have to admit, that the system on balance has been positive for the American people.
I say from this point forward we should only elect Losers, in the best interest of JayR. Electing anyone with a background of success will surely be only to please the elite.
Re: leaders background sicussion- split from primary watch thread
Doom, you have it backwards. I’m against the whole system.
Rebel, I hate to break your dreams, but you missed the “natural chrisma” part.
Ohio, my main man, look at the government and trade deficits, foreclosures and bankruptcies. You’re on Titanic.
Re: leaders background sicussion- split from primary watch thread
hahahah Titanic, you crack me up.
just a couple brief facts
US GDP in Billions of Current Dollars
Q4 1997 8,471
Q4 2007 14,080
So an economy that grew nearly 6 trillion dollars in the last decade is doomed?
Wishful thinking from a bitter man.
Re: leaders background sicussion- split from primary watch thread
Rebel, I hate to brake your dreams, but you missed the "natural chrisma" part. May be you may have a shot at being a successful attorney at best.
hmmmm do I have to go to law school for that?
I am charismatic, I am so charismatic that people come borrow the extra charisma when they go for interviews or to hook up etc.
yeaah boooy...
Re: leaders background sicussion- split from primary watch thread
