Maybe it's a form of punishment.
My friend is in a similar situation. They'll go out somewhere and if she says anything to upset him, he'll literally throw her out the car and just drive off. Once, he left her up in this extremely secluded area up in the woods. What did she do? She sat there for 5 hours till the middle of the night, ALONE, and just waited for him. Eventually, he came back after her 'punishment' was over.
In her case, this has been going on for about 7 years.
It's her own fault for not leaving him.
