Lata Mangeshkar to perform in Pakistan
By Our Staff Reporter
KARACHI, June 27: Legendary Indian singer Lata Mangeshkar will make her maiden stage appearance in Pakistan early next year when she will participate in three concerts, organizers revealed on Wednesday.
“Lata will perform in Karachi, Lahore and Rawalpindi. She is currently on vacation in Europe. But as soon as she returns, modalities and other formalities will be finalized,” Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) marketing director, Zahid Bashir, disclosed to Dawn from Lahore.
“The negotiations are almost in the final stages. Lata has expressed her willingness and if all goes well, we are expecting to announce the schedule in the next 15 days,” Zahid said, adding that the entire profit would go to he PCB.
“I have a $4 million television rights offer for the live coverage of Lata’s concerts. I am expecting to sell the title sponsorship at Rs20 million while the earnings from the gate will be around Rs150 million,” he said, explaining that the highest ticket would be of Rs10,000 and the lowest Rs6,000.
He said the Karachi concert will be held at the National Stadium under lights. “The initial feedback has been tremendous. A bank has offered to buy all the tickets.”
Zahid said he had held discussions with the top government officials who have agreed in principle to give Lata state guest protocol.
“Lata wanted to perform in September to pay her tribute to melody queen late Noor Jehan. But things didn’t work out then. But now it’s different and Lata’s enthusiasm has only increased to perform in a country where she enjoys a large following,” Zahid said.
Zahid admitted that PCB chairman Lt-Gen Tauqir Zia was a little hesitant in giving a go-ahead to musical concerts.
The Gen Zia, when contacted in England, denied that the PCB was organizing Lata’s concerts, but admitted that PCB had some offers in hand.
“It is premature to say which other leading Indian singers would accompany Lata. But yes, there will be a few more,” Zahid said.
Another Indian pop singer Lucky Ali, son of artist Mahmood Ali, is scheduled to perform in Karachi, on July 8.
