Last name of girl in your culture

Western culture add family name after first name. In Pakistani society, there used to be trend few decades ago that girl’s name got another feminine name as last name. For example, Naz, Bano, Batool, Fatima etc.

Do you know such names?

Re: Last name of girl in your cutlure

In my familu its girls name , dads name then family name. I have heard names such as begum , banu etc added after the girls name.

Re: Last name of girl in your cutlure

Why do they add such name after first name?

Re: Last name of girl in your culture

No idea

Re: Last name of girl in your culture

-ai is commonly added to names in our culture. This is more common with female names but there are a few male names that have the -ai ending as well. Some examples are the female names Galai, Shanzai, Shastai and Zhalai.

Bibi is also commonly added to female names. Bibi translates to "lady" and is the female equivalent to "Khan."

Re: Last name of girl in your culture

In Bengali culture Begum was (and still is) quite commonly used as a female's surname.. can make it near impossible to tell who belongs to whose family lol

I've heard Banu and Begum used as first names in other cultures as well..

Re: Last name of girl in your culture

In our culture, we used to add "khatoon". i remember my grandmother and aunts were called "mrs Khatoon" here in US. nowadays, we dont do this.

Re: Last name of girl in your culture

one name is not given anymore because it's considered old fashioned and that is adding "un-NisaaN" after the girl's first name like:

Zeb-un-nisaaN
Mehr-un-nisaaN
sehr-un-nisaaN

Re: Last name of girl in your culture

yup...Khaatoon is also considered old fashioned now...

there was a song about Khaatoon:

Khaatoon kii Khidmat meN salaam apun kaa! :D

there were other last names as well, like:
**
1. Aaraa **added after the first names, like:

jahaN-Aaraa
Gulshan-Aaaraa
Naseem-Aaraa

[aaraa comes from the Farsii word aaraastan = saNwaarnaa, sajaanaa]

**2. JahaaN **added after the first names, like:

Nusrat JahaaN
Noor JahaaN
Shagufta JahaaN

Our is simple, Singhs and Kaurs :)

Re: Last name of girl in your culture

I don't remember typical Sindhi last names behind girls. Parveen, Ara, Khatoon, Bibi, Mai, Bai, Bano, Khanum, all are used, but these all came from outside

Re: Last name of girl in your culture

My nani has Parveen added after her first name.
Dadi has Fatimah added after her first name.

I know that a lot of shia girls are still named Fatima/Batool/Zehra after their first names.

Begum, Bano etc are not so common now though.
