But I am not just talking about winning and losing. We all accept that winning and losing are part of the game. And whether or not teams like Brazil or Argentina or Germany or Dutch (khush zabardast :D) do well in every world cup, they are definitely more attractive to watch. There is a certain flair and stylishness about their play, something I honestly do not associate with english football.
The english game mainly relies on scoring thru short corners or a good header here and there. You would rarely see an english player score a really good or sensational field goal against a top team which is what real Football is about IMO. The Germans by contrast scored all field goals today
When I think about innovative and fluent attacking football, those 4 countries esp. Brazil and Argentina come first to my mind. Whether or not they do well in every world cup is besides the point. Even Ghana & Nigeria are more exciting to watch than England
GA: X2 is totally right about Dunga's Brazilian team! They are more reliant on individual brilliance than a flair stylish play.. Dont we all remember that Germany were the most defensive and boring team consistently? Until Klinsmann changed their total approach to the game and brought their style and flair closer to the pace and style of bundesliga. They have become more attractive since WC 2006 and their coach was assisting Klinsmann in WC 2006 and hence adopted the same approach. They dont rely on defence anymore.
England need a similar coach who can bring their style closer to premiership which sadly is not the case right now! England team should rely on pace utilizing width across the pitch. Set pieces are important but that is true for every team.
Gerrard did play behind Rooney prior to worldcup a move that failed and was widely pooh poohed by all experts, not sure why this time it would have made a difference. I think everyone has collective amnesia about that now.
it was less of a mistake bringing heskey out as much as it was keeping rooney on, Rooney was a non factor the entire tournament, really is not special.
Sven was not a bad manager either, I bet those who in the english media were against sven now see that he delivered quite a bit with the 'talent' he had at his disposal.
Gerrard played behind Rooney and he scored couple of times. More importantly, England did look like penetrating every now and then with THAT system. But Capello thought that Rooney was not scoring enough goals while playing as a lone striker and hence his love for Heskey continued.

^ They are through to QF. Their attack is great but defence was bad against Slovakia. Against a better team they'd leak more goals...

^ They have won all games so far and only had 2 goals scored against them, both penalties.
Thank god for the good goalkeeper who saved a few today.
Will be a tough one against Brazil (if they go through), first 'real' test this WC!

Chile are really impressive! Though they are trailing 2-0 at half time but Brazilians really struggled. One goal was scored from a set piece and second one was a brilliant counter attack.
Lets see what happens after the break.

Its already obvious now that Brazil will be playing against Holland in the QF...so for the Dutch...it will be important to keep their defences air-tight and patiently look for a goal to score... :)
PS: Defence first + Good Luck to Holland...excluding the Referee factor...hmmmmmmmmmmm! :)

Heart goes out to Chilean team. They ALWAYS try to score goals. Its just that they faced Brazil otherwise they could have taken a lesser team out (read England)
