Lasik/Laser Eye Surgery?

At one point I considered getting lasik but my optometrist said she doesn’t recommend it as my eyesight isnt that bad (bad enough though). So, I didn’t look into it further but my brother showed me the following video and now I don’t think I will ever even think about getting it. The video shows some of the negative side effects of the surgery that I had never even heard off. Pretty scary to be honest.

Has anyone had lasik done or know anyone? How was their experience?

Re: Lasik/Laser Eye Surgery?

I've been thinking of get it done for a long time. My mom got her eyes done about 10 years ago. But she had a laser surgery.
What are the side effects? (Youtube not working :()

Re: Lasik/Laser Eye Surgery?

Lasik is laser. Oh yes, no youtube in Pakistan!

Well in this show the guy who approved laser surgery in States/Canada (its approved by Food and Drug Administration - both countries follow it) said he wants to now reverse it but he longer works there anymore and no one is listening to him. Anyways, one of the side effects is permanent dry eyes which is so bad that the woman who they talk to has to wear goggles all the time so wind doesn't get into her eyes and make them dry. Which obviously leads to intense pain - she is always putting eye drops to keep her eyes moisturized. The other thing they talk about in the show is that patients are not told about all these possible long term side effects. Not to mention long term effects are not exactly known yet as the technology has not been around long enough. For some people the side effects aren't nearly as bad but they have to continue wearing their glasses.

Re: Lasik/Laser Eye Surgery?

The dryness does go away with time I guess. Anyway, I'm just thinking about it for now. I'll research it for sure, when I decide to get it done. Mom's eyes are fine, but she's far-sighted now and has to use glasses when reading. But that's because she's in her late 40's, it's perfectly normal for one to start using reading glasses at this age.

Re: Lasik/Laser Eye Surgery?

I got Lasik eye surgery done last summer.I was so scared ,didn't want to get it. I almost had these feelings, I 'll become blind,I used to get all negative thoughts what 'll happen if i become blind, how 'll i spend rest of my life, who 'll look after me goshhhh I used to get sad :(
Thanks to one of my best buddy, he is the one who motivated me as he got it done before me. On the operation day,I walked myself alone as i had it during week days,no one was free to go, I made my heart strong. It was so scary, I felt the pain so badly. The operation was done in an hour.Later, my sis came to pick me. First one week was really hard, I didn't wash my face for one week. For the first 2 days I felt knives and needells in my eyes. Thanks to my mum she looked after me so well, she used to put drops in my eyes four times a day and she kept herself awake for whole 2 nights so that I won't touch my eyes in sleep. I was not allowed to use mobile, watch tele , read news paper or do anything,I could only listen music and stay in bed. It annoyed me so much, I used to get angry as they warned me you 'll become angry and get frustrated so quickly.

I got so happy when after 2 days I was able to see everything so clear, felt like I got a new life. :) It has been more than a year now, Alhumdulilah it is all good. I suggest everyone to get it done.

People who wear contact lenses they damage their eye sight more and more.

Re: Lasik/Laser Eye Surgery?

why do u say contact lens damages eyes?

Re: Lasik/Laser Eye Surgery?

Because each time you touch your eyes, you almost pinch it when you remove them so it disturbs your eye sight and it is not good that is what my surgeon told me.

Re: Lasik/Laser Eye Surgery?

Contacts require a lot of care. My dad's been using them everyday for the past 20 years, and his eyes are still fine. My mom on the other hand chose to get the eye surgery, because the doctor told her not to wear contacts anymore. She got an infection from them, probably because she didn't wash them properly, or wore them for too long in one go.

Re: Lasik/Laser Eye Surgery?

Contacts are risky it is better to get the eye surgery done. :k:

Re: Lasik/Laser Eye Surgery?

how weak was your eyesight?

Re: Lasik/Laser Eye Surgery?

^ 3.5 and 3.7.

Re: Lasik/Laser Eye Surgery?

Yes I got Lasik done about 3 years ago and similar experience to Lilly ..

I was scared hell, infact the first LASIK I got in both eyes ,results werent 20:20 .. there was a slight difference in both the eyes .. so they corrected it the second time with a lasek .. and then it was all fine .. and Alhumdullillah its going well so far .. there was dryness in the first month after the treatment , but never after that ..

Re: Lasik/Laser Eye Surgery?

I know lots of people who have had it done and most successfully (in terms of daytime eyesight). But the permanent dry eyes are a problem. My cousin also was one of the few whose eyes it damaged and she needed a corneal transplant.

If it's the Laser surgeon telling you that contact lenses damage your eyes, then I would take it with a large pinch of salt.

Providing all the guidelines are followed and you don't get a nasty, potentially damaging infection (can be avoided), contact lenses are safe. The most common side effect that can happen is again, dry eyes, but that can be reversed by not wearing them any longer. And even though hard lenses are out of fashion, they have even less side effects - better vision and no dryness problems than soft.

Here's the point for me: I know lots of doctors and surgeons who wear glasses and haven't gone for this and when I ask them why, they say their colleagues in the profession would never do it themselves because of the risk and 'normal' side effects, so they wouldn't either.

Re: Lasik/Laser Eye Surgery?

No not always. The woman in the show has permanent dry eyes. Only if you could watch it - its really bad. :frowning: Actually my optometrist said if I get the surgery done I would have to start wearing reading glasses after 40 guaranteed so I think the same is true for your mom.

Lily how can an invasive surgery be safer then something like contact lens? As long as they are used properly that is. I can’t believe your optometrist recommended LASIK for you. Since its recommended for people whose vision is worse then 4.00. At least that’s what my optometrist said even though they are partnered with the LASIK place in town.

Thankfully they were able to correct yours - not the case for everyone.

Again, Alhadulillah your cousin had the side effects corrected by surgery but one never know what will happen and if it can be corrected. Agree with the bold part - I would get my information from other sources and not the surgeon as they will be biased. The fact that the guy who approved this technology now realizes the significant and long term side effects is enough for me to not consider it.

Anyways, my point is not to scare anyone or change their mind. I just wanted to share this video I came across and think everyone should make an informed choice.

Re: Lasik/Laser Eye Surgery?

Actually, no, it's still precarious. It's a transplant which can be rejected just like any other. Major surgery for which she spent quite a while finding the best surgeon.

Re: Lasik/Laser Eye Surgery?

He said this because he tried to persuade me to get it done.

They told me to get lasik or the other one , it was my choice to get LASIK done and I got standard one which was quite expensive compared to normal.

Re: Lasik/Laser Eye Surgery?

Yea of course but I meant at least there was a possibility to correct it but someone who has permanent dry eyes to the point of extreme pain that they can't function there is no fix.

The other one? Sorry, not sure what you mean.

Re: Lasik/Laser Eye Surgery?

I think concentrating on the initial tests done is very important, if you have any doubt , get a second opinion as well before getting the surgery done .. Alot of my friends wanted to go ahead with Lasik but didnt coz the tests they do before the surgery didnt satisfy them enough to go for it and they accepted that Lasik or Lasek wasnt for their eyes ..

Problems begin when we ignore those tests ..

Re: Lasik/Laser Eye Surgery?

whats the verdict on permanent lenses?

Re: Lasik/Laser Eye Surgery?

I kind of like my glasses, even though I don't wear them that often. Tried contacts in high school but it messed me up for sports lol. I was so used to playing with my (relatively) bad eye sight that the sudden clarity felt weird. I stopped using them after a few months of annoyance. I thought about laser surgery but like CDG said, I would need reading glasses as I got older.

Besides, the ladies dig the glasses. :D
