Re: Laser Hair Removal
Thanks!
Hey naqsa,
Yup, this is why hormone tests are so important. You need to get the hormones under control before you can eliminate the hair that is there. Sometimes getting the hormones under control in itself will solve a lot of the problem and one will notice a decrease in facial hair density and thickness. Diane and Yasmin are both prescribed for this. You can stop the BCP at any time but then the hair will come back.
I'm not sure about any herbal remedies, it would be great if there was something that worked though.
I mentioned Vaniqa above. Like naqsa has mentioned, as soon as you stop using it, the hair will go back to how it was. A common side effect is acne. It can also make the skin very sensitive and even cause boils (I know one report of this). Just be careful.
Don't pills such as yasmin and other BC pills make you fat? I considered birth control because I have extremely heavy periods as well as very bad cramping, but the only reason I did not go through with it was because I am already chubby and need to lose about another 10-15 lbs for my wedding.
Re: Laser Hair Removal
Tweetypie i can so relate to you!!!
im having pretty much the same problem as you, having excessive facial+body hair and im really frustrated and it gets on my self confidence aswell. so far ive been threading the small areas and bleaching the large areas, but it doesnt look good at all. I had talked with a doctor a few weeks ago and discussed everything with her. My periods are not very regular either and im 2-3 kg underweight but my hormones were said to be alright when i did the tests 1½ year ago so i have no idea why i suffe from this. Cuz it was never this bad a few years ago when i was around 13, (im 18 now) so she said she will send me to a dermotologist cuz they know this stuff better. Having an appointment with her next week or so, nd hopefully she will tell if there is something else and if i should go for electrolosys. cuz i feel i really need to do something about it at least the face... as tweetypie said , dont want to spend hours threading every two days and the face is what is visible to everyone.. :(

It depends, not everyone experiences this.
From my own experience and most people I know, it increases your appetite - that's what makes you fat. But if you can control yourself and not eat more than before, you should be fine. Control is something not many people have.
It would only help with the hair if you have the particular hormonal imbalance that bcp would correct. This is for you and your endo to figure out.
Re: Laser Hair Removal
HNK - I'm surprised she has referred you to a dermo and not an endo, the latter is what you need.
Re: Laser Hair Removal
^hmm.. will see what the dermo says, what is it called endo.. the full name for it? :S

endocrinologist - specialises in endocrine disorders that cause hormonal imbalances.
Gina what did you do to get rid of the hair?
DB, I used a combo of Nd Yag and diode..
Re: Laser Hair Removal
Gina which one worked better for you? The Yag or Diode? N are u fair skinned or olive?
Re: Laser Hair Removal
DesiBeautii - I explained this before and I really think you are not reading anything, otherwise what Gina has said makes absolute sense.
Diode long pulse lasers with a wavelength of 810nm work ok on skin types I-IV, and could be a good option for patients with skin type IV when they are too dark for an alexandrite laser, but want a more effective treatment than with an Nd:YAG on finer hair. The most popular on the market is the LightSheer laser by Lumenus. Proper operation of diodes is absolutely necessary for good results, so operator skill is especially important when using this type of laser.
Gina is most most likely borderline type IV or between Type III and IV (otherwise they would not be able to use the Diode at all!). It is explained above why they would have used a combo.
First go and have your consult. If you are solidly Type IV or V then stay with the clinic with the GentleYAG. If you are similar to Gina, as in boderline, you might want to find a clinic that has all the Lasers.
My clinic has Alexandrite and Nd:Yag (in the Apogee Elite) and the Lightsheer Diode, so they can provide the best treatment to all patients.
Personally I dont recommend laser on the face, as qualified electrologist I have far too many clients complain about growing even more facial hair from laser for what reason are unkown, I do however recommend it for the body as it seems more effective but again its not going to remove all hair as its known for REDUCTION not REMOVAL. Anyone who wants anymore info on my practise or just general advice visit my website I would be more than happy to help, having suffered from excess hair myself I understand the frustration of it all.
Re: Laser Hair Removal
^^What clinic? Did any if you girls go to American Lader Center? I cancelled my appointment there since I only read negative reviews! And somebody answer my question: is it better to go to a derm or to a center?

I'm in the UK.
I can't say what is better for the US. All I know that either way ANYWHERE that practices Laser is after your money first and foremost be if derm or clinic (whereas a good electrologist will want to HELP you).
This is why I am labouring the point that everyone please do your research. You need to know what is effective treatment and what's not, how to find a good clinic and when to cut your losses.
If you can get to one of the electrologists that can give you full clearances each time you visit, it's just like getting Laser, in that it lasts 8 weeks or so (for the face). Each visit will get shorter as there will be less hairs and they will be finer in a year or so you will be DONE. No hair, no matter whether it's thick or thin. Trust me, people who manage to find such an electrologist fare much better than the best laser treatments.

I completely understand however I just want to get some personal opinions I already understand which laser is used for what skin type.
I have already gone for my consultation as stated previously. I am going to go ahead and stick to the clinic I have found as they have great prices. They actually do provide a variety of lasers.
I hope all goes well. Anway thanks for all of your help. :)
Re: Laser Hair Removal
Well then you would have understood that one kind of Laser would not work better than another. What is used depends on the skin type, then hair type and then settings must be tailored to provide optimum treatment.
Where one can be treated with both Diode and YAG, the YAG will work best on the thickest hairs and the Diode on the finer hairs (possibly, as the Diode is very tricky to use).
I think you should ask your questions on a specialist forum, not here where most people don't know anything other than machine type in regards to their treatment.
Re: Laser Hair Removal
I just want to hear about personal experiences.
Re: Laser Hair Removal
You can get them as well as they will be much more informative.
Personal experiences of good treatment are only any use if they contain detailed information when it comes to Laser.
There is no point me just saying I had excellent results with Nd:YAG and someone else assuming they can get the same just from that. So many things helped me get those results and the person would need to be educated about those too.
Firstly the machine type.
Then the fact that I grew out then waxed all the hairs a certain period before my first appointment to ensure that virtually all the hair there was in the anagen phase (Laser can only destroy hairs in the angagen phase).
Then my treatment settings. You need to know what sort of settings will provide permanency. A lot of clinics treat just on the borderline of what will work so that you do get some results but not as good as you could be, so that you keep coming back.
Then the length between sessions. These need to be optimised too. My clinic would have suggested I go back every 8-10 weeks for sessions (this is always the case) on the legs. I know better and know that it should be 12-16 weeks and why.
I have pictures of before and after most of my treatments so I can really compare how much reduction has happened and I know my settings for every single treatment and test patch.
I hope you understand what I'm trying to say to you. Not that it's not good to ask, but if you are really serious about gaining good knowledge you need to know what questions to ask and where best to ask them.
You have already decided to go for Laser hair removal on the face, meaning you are satisfied about the info on the risk of burns, pigmentation or induced growth.
Now you need the info on how to get good treatment.

Same for my electrologist. A good number of her clients are people who had to turn to electrolysis to reverse what Laser did to them.
Re: Laser Hair Removal
so my sister had appointment today, she got almost same prob. as me. And since she is below 18 she will get this treatment for free. i wonder how it will be for me though...
