Re: Laser eye surgery
^ Basically, you're given a sedative and anesthetic eye drops, so even though you're awake, you don't really feel a lot of pain during the procedure.
Your eye immobilized, and either a fine mechanical blade (in low-tech establishments) or a laser (in more high-tech establishments) is used to cut a small flap in your cornea (the transparent tissue on the front of the eye, which refracts light), which is then folded back to reveal the middle layer of the cornea. This is supposed to be one of the more uncomfortable parts of the surgery.
A laser is then used to reshape the inside of the cornea, literally vaporizing the unwanted tissue in a calculated fashion to help the eye focus light better. Once this is done, the flap is unfolded and repositioned back in place. After the surgery, you're given eye drops and antibiotics, and special goggles to wear at night to keep you from rubbing your eyes (which could displace the flap). Over time, the flap resettles and becomes more difficult to displace...but, like I said before, it never heals, so it is always possible to disrupt it and cause serious complications...
Re: Laser eye surgery
Okeey, this might sound weird..hihi...ive considered eye surgery several times, but i always end up not making up my mind...
Firstly i tried contact lenses to see how it looks like without glasses, and it was a biiig change for me. Ive used glasses in 9 years now, and i cannot make myself to become a contact user:s
Secondly i dont like my look without the glasses....thats the main thing...and when i see threads like this one, i wanna scream coz im too confused and frustrated. I like my glasses, but in a way im tired of them too...and ive tried getting new ones but i dont find any that i likee..... im stuck with this dilemma and dont know what to do...
Anyone who has been in same dilemma as me?:S or is it just me? i know im a bit weird and all...lolz..
Re: Laser eye surgery
I had it done with optical express, cost me £2300! (price depend on your prescription) There is NO chance of losing ur eyesight or nething, and it is such a easy procedure! u just go in, the proceduce takes 5 mins max, ur awake while it happens, then they ask ytou tro wait in the waing area few minutes then your free to go home. My vision improved instantly, and the next day i had BETTER than 20/20 vision without glasses!
For people like me who needed to wear glasses all the time, it makes SUCH a difference :D
Hmm...Optical Express was what i was talking about earlier too. Alesha, what was your prescription tho and when did you get it done?
Re: Laser eye surgery
i was -3.75 and -3.5 in my other eye. I had it done last may. my brother and two of my cousins also got it done recently.
sadia- my cousin was exactly the same, she thought she looked ugly without glasses lol but give it a week and you get totally used to it and you'll prob wish ud had done it earlier!!

Re: Laser eye surgery
I had Lasik wavefront surgery just over a year ago, and after wearing glasses and contacts for over twenty years I can say it’s the best decision I ever made.
I had a pretty strong prescription of -7 and -8 as well as dry eyes and astigmatism and always assumed laser surgery wouldn’t be an option. The surgery itself was painful once the painkillers wore off, but it didn’t last long and I just went to sleep and when I woke up I was fine. What was amazing was being able to see clearly immediately after the surgery, even though there was a slight mist due to all the drops in my eyes.
The only side effect I have had is that of dry eyes, which I had pre surgery anyway but the surgery has definetely worsened it. However, I feel the benefits of having had the surgery far outweigh the pain of having to carry around eye gel.
Actually, the most painful part of the surgery was the bill - £4,800. Ouch ![]()
Re: Laser eye surgery
thanks for the feedback Brit Chick....good to see you around again...
I am soooo tired of wearing glasses all the time and since I sometimes feel the need for reading glasses now (yes I am old) I really want to rid myself of them.
I suppose that because your prescription was a complicated one to begin with the cost was a bit higher than others.
I know of someone that went to Pakistan to have some dental work done because they didn't have a health plan here in Canada and the cost of the root canal etc was going to be more than the cost of a flight and having the work performed in Pakistan. So he took a week off and got the work done there.....plus got to see family et al.
I am considering this for lasik....
Re: Laser eye surgery
my mom she coudl save money so that last time she went to pakistan she had some dental work done there....big mistake. she came back and a couple of months later began having terrible toothache. turns out the dentist in pakistan did something terribily wrong, and she had to get it fixed here...she said having the pain gone was worth paying more over here. The docs/dentists there are messed up. She went to the one of the "best" dentists in isb...ha ha..what a joke.
My plan is to get it done this year.
And I got it done. Yaaayyyy.
Re: Laser eye surgery
Afshi,
I have heard other horror stories too. Ibrahim had his teeth cleaned by one of the more "expensive and glamourous" clinics in the elite area of Karachi.
He ended up with some sort of stomach infection; he suspects from unclean tools or something.
I'm still hopeful......

My mother did the same thing herself actually and had root canal treatment carried out once my wedding was out of the way. The dentist she went to had trained in the States and then moved back to pak. She hasn't had any problems with her dental work as far as I know.
Yeah my surgery cost more than I'd anticipated due to the complicated prescription and that there weren't many surgeons at the time who used the type of laser I needed etc etc. All worth it in the end though :)
Re: Laser eye surgery
I am so dying for this procedure!!!
Just sick and tired of wearing glasses.
Re: Laser eye surgery
does laser eye treatment hurt?
I had LASIK done last yr. The procedure itself was uncomfortable for me. The doc put anesthetic drops in my eyes. But it still hurt slightly. And once one eye was done, it was even harder for me while the second eye was being done. I kept feeling drowsy. Later I took some painkillers and the slight pain was definitely bearable. I was so happy that first night when I removed my goggles and discovered I could see! My vison was terrible before.
A yr and a half on, my eyes are slightly weak again. The doc said that happens if you have a high power to begin with.
But I'd still recommend it to anyone who is sick of their glasses. I had a very power, around -12! My heavy glasses were ruining the shape of my nose. So I've never regretted having the procedure. My eyes are dryer than they were before, artificial tears keep them okay.
Re: Laser eye surgery
^ sounds very similar to my experience, although my eyesight is still 20:20. I think I'd be annoyed to pay all that money to only have my vision corrected for a year. I had mine done through a company that offers a lifetime guarantee and so if I do require any corrective surgery in the future I can have it done free of charge.
I didn't find tha artificial tears much help at all, they barely helped before my surgery and post surgery the dryness really increased to the point where blinking would be painful. I use eye gel now throughout the day which is far more moisturising and an ointment that resembles vaseline at night as and when required.
And I got it done. Yaaayyyy.
awesome!!!! how is the difference? Im starting uni soon and I really dont like the idea of wearing my lenses all the time, it gets tiring after a long day, and no glasses suit me. I just stumbled across this thread and I too am considering it now! :(
Re: Laser eye surgery
So I've heard one horror story about eye surgery in Karachi.
I really would like to have a good story to compare to......
Nobody has any contacts in this industry in Pak?
Re: Laser eye surgery
Well my SIL had laser surgery too a few weeks after I had mine (a whole other story :p) and had hers done in Islamabad. I can ask for the details if you wish, as far as I know she is happy with the result but doesn’t really know much about the surgery with regards to what kind of laser/procedure etc as sadly, in pak and in those social circles, the effectiveness of surgery is judged greatly on it’s cost ![]()
Re: Laser eye surgery
I would appreciate it if you could ask Brit Chick. At this stage any details would be helpful.
