laptop internet connection question

I have a sony laptop (vaio-4 yrs old or so) and it doesn’t really have a great configuration compared to the new laptops. it had a 516 ram, and it could only go upto 1gb, so i recently put in 2 516 cards and it has obviously picked up on some speed.

My main issue is that we have wireless internet in condo. There is a desktop computer that uses it, and 2 other laptops which both work perfectly fine with the connection. However, my laptop DOES connect to the internet, but the damned thing just works soooooooooooooooo SLOW. It has this little switch which says WLAN (on/off), which means I can just switch off the connection from this switch, or switch it on. I find that if I keep on restarting my connection to the internet by playing with this switch every 2 mins or so… that is the only way that I will get my work done on the internet.

My point, we were thinking of investing in a new modem, but the other 2 laptops work totally fine. Ive tried taking my laptop to the room where we have the modem, and also using other laptops in mine but my laptop’s connection strength just WONT STAY STRONG till I don’t keep on restarting it every 2 mins with that WLAN switch.

Makes sense…??
Please help. Is my lappy too old now?? I’m sure there’s no problem with the modem. Is there any other device which needs to be reinstalled on my laptop, or any component. Please help… :frowning:

Re: laptop internet connection question

hahhaha yeah I should probably do that soon fbi before it just dies on me. Btw, just wanted to share my experience with you since youre also a "new" vaio owner..

Well I got mine from future shop (that is they are dependable retailers) and after 3 months or so I had to send it for repairing b/c one of the pixels went blank. That is on a black screen, you could see this tiny white dot. Now I didn't know that they had to send these out to china/japan for repairs, and it took another 2 months or so for it to come back. Now guess what.... a week down from when I got it back, I realized that the speakers weren't working. I was shocked/ appalled/ devastated..I had to wait a few more weeks since i was loaded with homework those days and couldn't give away my laptop yet again for repairs. And so it was gone again for 2 months or so for getting its speakers fixed. This all happened to me in the first year that I owned this laptop....

Now I don't know if I would want to invest in another sony machine again. But I know that this graphic quality I will never get from other companies.. sigh (and I wish you good luck with your lappy fbi)

Re: laptop internet connection question

:hmmm: sony laptops, phones, and digital cameras are over-rated in my personal opinion.. company cashes on their good name built by their OUTSTANDING video camera products..

anyway, there is one way (and cheaper) of disabling the wlan, also, disabling in your hardware profile (system properties of my computer/device manager)… then getting yourself a PCMCIA-based or usb-based wireless card thats same ‘manufacturer’ as ur wireless box.. dont get all latest ‘n’ or draft"n" , just get something thats compatible.. and built within a year or 2.. linksys and dlink are the two brands i have played around the most with, linksys is my favourite due to its better stability (bit more money than dlink)

only reason im saying is that getting new laptop will involve moving a working machine’s stuff onto the new one.. money itself, and if a simple new-card upgrade will fix the problem.. why not..

so wlan is needed to be disabled at:

  1. bios startup utility
  2. windows device manager under my computer’s properties (hardware)
  3. make it a habit no longer touch that on/off wireless button.
