Somehow women are most status conscious and think that it won't be cool if they'll know or speak mother-tongue .
I have noticed that Punjabi women are less likely to speak in Punjabi compared to the men... maybe it is the status issue or I've heard of people say that Punjabi sounds too harsh... I don't know, it's a languge and it sounds fine to me.
But I don't think girls in the US or the West speak in English over Urdu/Punjabi because of status. Lots of people in the West are intrigued by other languges besides English, so more languages makes one special. :) It's more of a self-conscious and self-confidence thing. We feel more self-conscious when speaking to others in Urdu/Punjabi because we don't want to say something wrong, or speak Urdu in an American accent... we become paranoid of what the other Pakistani person fluent in Urdu will think.
Language has nothing to do with being pakistani :) It all depends upon ur level of comfort.....if one can express their emotions with their spouses more easily in english.....then english is the way to go....me n my hubby speak the combination of both urdu and english.....there are some things which i feel i can express more comfortably in english than urdu.....it all relies upon the convenience level....hes also very good in punjabi but unfortunately im not....so i sometimes kind of try to learn that from him too :p the more languages you know the better.....but i dont think so that anyone would speak english with their spouses to "impress" them or in an effort to get "modernized".....no matter how much one tries....you cannot camouflage anything in a husband-wife relationship!
Re: Language barriers in relationships

Communicate through sign language, such as the middle finger
