Lamb Meat smell?

does lamb meat always have that distinct smell?..we could not find mutton in our local area so can anybody suggest me how to get rid of meat smell from the food i cook?

ps. i do bhoonofy, use gg paste enough etc etc…but nothing works…hate this smell

Re: Lamb Meat smell?

Im not sure if this works for all meat, but if I feel like my meat smells, I usually put a couple teaspoons of white vinegar on it, and let it sit for a few minutes. Then I wash/rinse the meat. It usually kills some of the smell.

Re: Lamb Meat smell?

thanks… will try that out n see if it works…

keep the suggestions coming please

Re: Lamb Meat smell?

Yes I have found vinegar to help.
I am not too fond of whole garam masalas in dishes but if I feel the meat has some smell I use it (cinnamon stick, green cardamom, black cardamom, cloves, peppercorns).Their smell overpowers the smell of the meat.

Re: Lamb Meat smell?

Garlic usually helps but it sounds like you are already using that…

Re: Lamb Meat smell?

Maktoob, yes unfortunately the smell of lamb is seriously hard to get rid of ! I didnt find it as hard to remove in several other countries, but in the UK, its next to impossible .. I have tried almost every freaking tactic that people told me and still cant eat lamb peacefully !

The maximum you can do is put loads of vinegar on the meat and let it sit in a strainer for at least 20 minutes .. the blood will start getting drained out of the meat .. then before cooking wash it and that reduces it a bit ..

Also, what chips said, add some whole aromatic masala’s to the meat while bhooning it , that also somewhat reduces the smell ..

Re: Lamb Meat smell?

I do the vinegar trick, then wash. then boil it in water with some GG and 1/2 tsp of cinnamon powder for 5 minutes, drain and then use for whatever curry/gravy I want to use it in

Re: Lamb Meat smell?

^ boiling it in water then draining it out , doesnt it take the yakhni or nutrition out of that meat? :konfused:

Re: Lamb Meat smell?

lamb, goat etc have a more gamey smell coz their fat has short chain fatty acids. i think the best you can do is drain away the fat that floats up. i have no idea why anyone would want to eat lamb and not want the flavor of it though.

Re: Lamb Meat smell?

I do it for 5 mins max in boiling water. the part I throw away doesnt look like yakhni.

Re: Lamb Meat smell?

goat vs lamb???

I do find lamb meat a bit smelly but I agree with queer. Why eat it when you are getting rid of all the good stuff and in the end you have tasteless meat. I also rinse it very well.

I love goat meat though

Re: Lamb Meat smell?

Queer, its people like us, who dont have a choice :frowning: .. Where I live we dont get Goat meat and places that we do get either its not halal, fresh or too expensive !

So we end up with lamb :hinna:

Re: Lamb Meat smell?

me neither but you are right about using garam masala. it does help with the smell …

you know …i thought it was me doing something wrong that it smells so bad…the biggest problem is my husband is fond of eating meat and i have to cook meat dish every other day almost and it is so disappointing to put so much effort in and in the end what you get is smelly lamb pulao and alloo gosht…(which i cooked a day before and will finish it myself today naak band karkay) because kitna insan food banayee aur phainkay:S…but as everyone is suggesting…vinegar and garam masala do help to some extent…vinegar i havent tried but will definitely use inshAllah…

thora lamba kaam hay but can be done…anything to get rid of this smell…

Thanks everyone for the suggestions:)

Re: Lamb Meat smell?

what chicken biryani said.sadly we dont get it here…i love goat meat too

Re: Lamb Meat smell?

The only red meat we’ve always had in our family is lamb. Masala is made first with whole masalas (after onions are done, then tomatoes and spices are added). Cinnamon stick and cardamon are essential for the smell but we use everything else chips mentioned as well. It should only smell a bit in the beginning… and once it’s bhooned should smell like normal salan. The quality of the lamb and how fresh it is, is very important too. Oh and I don’t know what other people do but we have our lamb divided up at the butchers.. so there are the less fatty pieces used for salan, mostly fatty pieces used when making plough, and chops separately.

Re: Lamb Meat smell?
