lamb/beef/goat/sheep/what?

Okay.. umm

i always feel so weird ordering meat from desi stores, cz i feel like the butcher is always ripping me off cz they think im an abcd (well they’re not wrong :bummer: ) I mean do they do that? really? am i being paranoid?

i know goat = bakra ka gosht

but lamb is diff than goat right?
and we dont eat sheep right?

oh and do u all just buy ur meat from one place, or do u go to diff places all the time?

I know this has to be the dumbest/blondest question/thread ever. :smack:

Re: lamb/beef/goat/sheep/what?

goat is bakra.
lamb is a baby sheep.
sheep is,hmmmmm...."dumba" as one would call it in urdu...
and thats pretty much all I know about the meats....

I have always bought goat meat...never sheep(do they even sell that here..??..I dont know...)...In Pakistan people use sheep/dumba on Eid ul Adha for qurbani so it means they can eat it too...
I have tried halal lamb a few times...tastes fine...but never cooked or bought it myself....

where I live ,I can get all kinds of meat...goat/beef/chicken from one shop....

Re: lamb/beef/goat/sheep/what?

sara we buy meat from one place ( desi store ) all the time..

only for fish i would walk somewhere else...

Re: lamb/beef/goat/sheep/what?

lol @ Sara

hum tu meat aik hee jaga sai buy kartae hain :) u know ziada jaan pehchan hoti hai tu butcher meat bhi acha hota hai...

waisai mein bari laraka hoon i tell the butcher/owner agar meat (goat) mein sai smell ayee tu mein ghost wapis kar kai jaon gi aur money back...so he gets scare lol..so no complain so far...

always buy baby goat meaning 18 lb bakra uss mein smell nah hoti :)

Re: lamb/beef/goat/sheep/what?

We buy our meat from one place and if you're an ABCD like me...talk to your mom or someone who knows their meat before you place your order. I get my mom to order it all for me and I just go and pick it up so they dont take advantage of me...I also get the same feeling you do. I dont know if Im getting ripped off or not but I do feel they get careless if they think you dont know what you're doing.

In our family, we dont eat lamb or sheep meat. We only eat beef, goat, chicken and fish. Thats it.

Re: lamb/beef/goat/sheep/what?

for it goes like Lamb ( Bhehir ) , mutton ! then fish ...... Chicken , had enough of it and i m not into beef ....

we order a full lamb , get it cut accordin to ar need ! its more or less enough for a month !

here in pakistan , hell i dont know , why they all are after beef ( or bachhiyaa ka Ghoast as they call it ) ...

Re: lamb/beef/goat/sheep/what?

We shop at our local desi store for all desi stuff including meat and we seem to use a lot of Mutton, which I know takes ages to cook however I use my slow cooker-works a treat.

Price wise Chicken legs (thigh and drumstick) work out quite economical in my humble opinion-you seem to get more meat for ya money.

We do use lamb-once in a while for a change or I use lamb mince for kebabs as my husband seems to love meat a lot...whereas I prefer Daals....

I do prefer mutton, I think it has more taste.

Re: lamb/beef/goat/sheep/what?

Sheep/ lamb is something most desis don't like the taste of. Middeleasterns eat a lot of it and some Middleeastern (and even Pakistani) butchers will pass off lamb/ sheep as goat. Poeple ususally say that lamb meat smells. I have no issues with it, and if you don't either its halal to eat. However, if you are having a desi dawat don't cook lamb as most people don't like it.

I too buy chicken legs and thigh. The storewala will cut them up into 3 pieces and remove skin if you so wish for salan. Unlike Pakistan, chicken legs are cheaper here in the US. Some stores give chicken legs even cheaper if you buy the whole box. If you are mainly a chicekn eating person then the box may last 2-2/12 months for a family of your size.

Mutton is bakra ka gosht and when you buy try to order the whole leg as most store walas will give you meat full of bones if you buy by the pound. Mutton is expensive so better to go with the best bet. The leg costs anywhere from $28-40 depending on weight and makes 6 times of salan roughly. Never place the order of the leg over the phone, just tell them to reserve the leg in your name and ask them to cut it up while you are there.

I buy most meat from one place. Other people buy it from diffrent stores maybe due to price difference between diffreent items (eg qeema cheap at one place and chicekn at another). Or they may be plain finicky saying, "Is kay payee achay hain, us ka mutton acha hay". For small families unless you are buying in bulk ghoing to different places to save on price doesn't usually make a lot of sense.

Desi stores are more expensive than Amercian ones usually due to the halal factor. The prices are usually fixed. However, ask around to see which store offers the best prices overall.

correct... n all these r known as mutton

whereas beef is cow's meat (vehri)

obviously beef n mutton r two different types but it depends from location to location whether one has to go at one place or more, to buy them

Re: lamb/beef/goat/sheep/what?

I dont like the taste of lamb and all I seem to get here is Lamb. Any UK guppies know where I can get good beef or mutton in the Southall and surrounding area?

Re: lamb/beef/goat/sheep/what?

sara try veal (baby cow)... we order goat and veal

Re: lamb/beef/goat/sheep/what?

Re: lamb/beef/goat/sheep/what?

Alishaht - try Rizwans! They are good and hygiene quality is good - Others out of Southall area are a complete rip-off in my opinion!

Re: lamb/beef/goat/sheep/what?

Btw Sara - i just pretend what i want (sometimes i dont) - i act like one of the aunties and ask the butcher "yay kia hai? Ya kaisa daytay hai aap" and then go "mmmhhhh bohot mengha hai" etc etc...make it look i know ma stuff! ;)
