It is difficult to believe that something as big as IR can be turned around so dramatically. Whether it was Nitish Kumar who started it or Lalu, I am glad the result is good.
I am even more glad that Nitish Kumar is in Bihar trying to make things better there.

The truth is Nitish who started the modernisation of the Indian railways (Nitish is an electrical engineer himself). He also spent a lot of time in establishing the right set up of administrative officers and the engineers.
Today the Wheel and Axle plants in Yelahanka, Indian Railway design centre in Lucknow are one of the best in design and manufacturing. A lot of committees appointed in the previous NDA government (like Rakesh mohan committee) actually worked overtime to come up with recommendations to improve the functioning of the Indian railways.
At the same time Lalu should be credited for making Indian railways growth inclusive. He has ensured that Indian railways still stays loyal to the common man and has actually decreased the cost of travelling. But, I still feel that the pace of modernization of the Indian railways is slow. We need to be quicker in order to achieve better results.
The other aspect that people do not know of the Indian railway is the "Deferred Tax". For the past few years Indian railways has not paid up tax to the central government and that part has been shown as a deferred tax. No provision has been made in the railway budget for the deferred tax. After the minimal period of 5 years, the establishment has to pay the deferred tax and that is when the next incumbent railway minister has to take the hit.

Indian Railways are very professionally run. I saw a GPS based device invented by an IR engineer which practically makes it impossible for two trains on the same track to hit each other. Impressive. Instead of fooling around with JF-17s, let Pakistan match India in running its railways as well.

Well IR might be better than PR, but no one can beat the chicken sandwiches they serve on AC trains (tez gaam express or whatever it's called now) from Rawal Pindi to Lahore...
And how come we never see these supposedly better trains in films or is Bollywood denied access to these trains?. The trains that we see are generally over-crowded with poor seating, not much different to ours!
Am I missing something here?

Pakistan democracy is much better and will bring to the fore even greater people than Lalu. Pakistanis love Lalu. He can run Pakistani Railway anytime.

What's common between Pervez Musharraf and Lalu Prasad- both of their families hail from Bihar.. Mushy claims he's a Syed but he has Hindu lineage- Him and Lalu could be distant cousins.
