Geo: Curiously absent from the scene. Probably a backdoor deal or understandign with the govt. doesn't hurt. But as much as I dislike Mullah, i dont like media getting too close to the govt or they risk losign credibility

World needs such pictures and example, no less from a country like Pakistan. This could be a watershed moment in Pakistan's long march towards a healthy society and world peace.

besides police/rangers didn't have any warrant.
Wasn't he trying to work as a middleman - he was making efforts to bring both govt. and those masjid people to negotiate.... isn't it something, we need at this time rather than killing people who are stuck in teh masjid.
am sure a lot of students are s tuck there. may be because they're afraid of coming out and get caught by the police. After all our police is scary...

he was a former ISI agent -- who was probably secretly trying to get them help, or doing their dirty work of inciting problems elsewhere

As much as I abhor what these people did (taking law in their hand and menacing the citizens of their city), I wouldn’t want to create a festering underclass that rears its ugly head in another decade or so. Isolating or marginalizing them will create more of them. Let’s not make heroes out of them for their silent supporters. Let’s not give anyone material for future folk/pind-lore.

I am sorry if it appeared that I was suggesting to isolate them. No, I favor exactly the opposite, and I have said this in other threads. In fact, this is also why I want provinced to be further subdivided, dilute the powers that are largely held (rightly or wrongly) in Punjab, provide accelerated avenues of development and wealth distribution in the remote rural areas of sindh, central punjab, balochistan and nwfp. Get these people engaged in economic activity, give them something to do, and they'll stop becoming a prey to Mullahs.

Yes, ofcourse some sort of action was needed but govt didn't handle it properly. There are very imp things that are missed by a lot of us such as,
general public had no idea about the curfew and/or operation. How come police was ordered to shoot people right away.
In any country or place under any govt, proper strategies are made. Why there weren't any ambulances ready before the operation. Why 2 innocent poeple who were apparently going to work in the morning (obviously unawared of the curfew) were shot. Those poor injured guys were miserably looking for help on the road for more than an hour. And there was no medical help. We don't know if they survived.
Its late to mention but govt could save islamabad from this embarrasement a long time ago. Why didn't they start negotiations etc. at the time when this whole drama was started.
When the CD stores were burned - wasn't that the right time to do some future planning. Didn't govt. realize that things weren't going good and they needed to plan some strategies.....
Also, now govt is offering help to those orphan students. may be things could be different if those students were offered the same a few months ago....

AAJ TV UPDATE: TALAT is trying to be over smart and trying to score points. Minister said "Allah karey yee loog SURRENDER ker dain" and TALAT was all charged up ... "we should use the word surrender, surrender tu DUSHMAN kertey hain, hameen bohat ehteyat kernee cheheyee words use kertey howey. blan blan"
get a life ... TALAT .and try to find the meaning of SURRENDER (give up or agree to forgo to the power or possession of another) and know that DUSHMAN, CRIMINALS, TERRORISTS etc always SURRENDER what else can we name it?
