Lahore Police try to abduct former DG IB

ISLAMABAD: Last ditch efforts are being made by the government to silence the ex-Director General Intelligence Bureau so that he could not appear in the Supreme Court on October 10 when he has been summoned to verify his statement already submitted in the apex court in misuse of secret funds in 1999 by the then prime minister, including doling out Rs3 million to a journalist.

In the latest move, the ex-DG’s house was raided by Punjab Police on Sunday evening, documents reveal.Documents available with The News reveal that strong resistance from staff, security and huge number of family members of former IB chief gathered at Rasm-e-Qul of former DG IB’s brother-in-law at his Lahore residence, foiled the government’s attempt to kidnap him by using the police force that too of a police station of an outside jurisdiction.

The sources said that it was planned that Niazi would be included in the list of disappeared-persons so he may not appear before the Supreme Court on Thursday and the case proceedings against the then PM may not continue smoothly.

Details reveal that the former DG IB Col (R) Iqbal Niazi after his submission of reply before the three-member bench of Supreme Court headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, is now facing humiliation as well as harassment by the Punjab Police for revealing the truth before the apex court.

The DG IB has submitted a written application with the Inspector General of Police stating the whole incident. The IG has asked the CCPO Lahore to submit a report on the application.The contents of the application addressed to the Inspector General of Police Punjab “Subject arrest of retried Government servant” reads: “I submit as under; I am retired Director General (DG) IB and reside at house 99 PAF Falcon Complex Gulberg –III, Lahore. On Sunday October 6, 2013 Rasm-e-Qul of my late brother-in-law was held at my residence. At About 8:00 pm when I along with my wife and children were seeing off my relatives and guests a raiding party of Faisal Town Police Station Lahore bumped into me and directed me in front of all the guests and started shouting “you are under arrest”, “you are an absconder” and “you have been arrested”.

“He almost handcuffed me when my family members intervened and disclosed my identity. Luckily I had my service card with me which he very reluctantly accepted in presence of several guests, thus he could not arrest me. My house lies in the area of Naseerabad Police Station Lahore whereas Faisal Town Lahore police raiding party without any verification or justification carried out this illegal operation thus causing me humiliation, inconvenience and disrespect. I have my reservations regarding this incident and reserve the right of bringing these facts to the knowledge of media. I also request for appropriate action as per law and regulations”, contents of the application of Col (R) Iqbal Niazi dated October 7, 2013 further stated.

Upon the ex-DG IB’s application, the IGP Punjab forwarded his application to Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) Lahore asking him to take necessary legal action and to send progress report to his office.

The contents of the memorandum vide NO. RPSO, dated October 7, 2013 issued with the stamp and signature of PSO for IGP and addressed to CCPO Lahore subject “Application of Iqbal Khan Niazi”, read: “Please find enclosed herewith an application submitted by Iqbal Khan Niazi. The Inspector General Police Punjab has directed to take necessary legal action and to send progress report to this office for his kind perusal. Copy along with application of Iqbal Khan Niazi forwarded to SP Operation Model Town Lahore for taking similar action.”
