One day I asked my husband if I'm better compared to the girl he may have loved before he knew me...and he said that humans always tend to seek better things... just like you get laid off or leave a job, chances are you'll look for something better...same way, let's say things didn't work out between you and someone, you'd hopefully look for a better partner. I prefer to believe that and I'm happy with it.
Regarding whether I'm the love of his life, I don't feel any lack of love so I have no reason to doubt it.
