Ladies living in Cold countries

Salam,

All those ladies who live in cold countries like in N. America, Europe what do you guys wear at home (material wise) if you are wearing shalwar kameez.

I am currently trying to use up all my lawn suits but for the future would like to choose suits that would be comfortable at home and I could also wear them to informal gatherings or even semi-formal.

Since I have started staying at home, I like to feel comfortable but dressed up as well. So what kind of material is best?

I would like material that doesn’t wrinkle easily and can be machine washed. I guess what I am trying to do is save some money especially with the costs of pakistani suits touching the roof and trying to have a wardrobe that would be suitable for home usage as well as Semi-formal dinner parties or get togethers.

Would love some suggestions from all you fashionistas.

Re: Ladies living in Cold countries

If I want to wear a shalwar qameez at home,I prefer georgette materials. The colors are fast (so can be washed with whites etc),they need no ironing after they get of the dryer (who needs that..!) and actually look neat (IMO).Thanks to central heating they are also comfortable to wear in extreme winters.
Also the cost is not too expensive so you can get a few and wear them a few seasons and even get rid of them if you want to.The stuff I wear at home is nothing fancy,I mean with fancy trimmings and laces etc so are easy to wash etc. They are usually not something I would wear to someone's house or a dinner party. That is separate stuff, bit on the fancier and pricier side.

:)

Re: Ladies living in Cold countries

khaddi, linen, cotton. Lawn doesnt cut it here though i used to wear it in canada....guess its way more extreme winter here.

u plan on wearing the same clothin indoors and out to a gathering??? Dont u have a kid?! My home clothes, even though nice, are in no state to be worn to anyones place...thanks to grubby lil fingers :\

Re: Ladies living in Cold countries

which country do u live in that is colder than canada?:O

How about lilen? As chips said georgette would suit u best..keep 3 or 4 to wear at home Only and a few to use outside..georgette or lilen arent that expensive..
I dont like khadi or cotton it gets wrinkled easily

Re: Ladies living in Cold countries

I wear comfortable PJs at home.

My outfit of choice at home is a t-shirt and shalwar.

Re: Ladies living in Cold countries

^Reha, that was my choice too when I was working and didn't have a kid. Being home all day I find I'm in a much better mood when I am decently dressed plus like Khawa once said kids see us they learn from us and appreciate it as well. (Not to forget hubby appreciates a woman who is not dressed in her PJs on a daily basis)

So what are the key differences between ghar waaley kapray and bahar waaley kapray ? Let me give an example: I have some last season (or maybe the season before) LSM lawn suits with embroidery and I wear them at home and they can be worn to an informal get together as well (I think).

What do you guys do different.

Re: Ladies living in Cold countries

Okay see that makes it different. I have no one appreciating me right now so t-shirt and shalwar is alllll good. :cb:

Okay so I think simple cotton suits should do it, no? Or clothes you wore last season that you won’t be wearing to dawats anymore?

Re: Ladies living in Cold countries

I'm with you reha...at home I'm in a comfy tshirt and track pants or pj's..I don't wear shalwar kameez around the house, and my husband has never complained. I don't think you have to be in desi karpray only to be neat and presentable. That being said, hear in North Texas where the weather ranges from very cold to very hot, linens & thicker cotton work best for winter while lawn and swiss voile are the only way to go for summer! I don't know anybody who wears georgette around the house....

Re: Ladies living in Cold countries

hey automne, i mentioned before i wear linen(cotton viscose) all the time at home.

most of them are printed fabrics, some are plainer, some are more fancy. i don’t know about recently but a few years back you could get this fabric with subtle sparkly lines highlighting some of the pattern, i kept these kameez’s for if someone was popping around (like my khala) so I’m are not dressed up but not a complete slob either.

if i was going to someone’s house (but not for a dawat or something), then i’d wear chiffon in the summer or still linen in the cooler weather. it’s just the fabric is fancier, so is the stitching and finishing. for example yesterday i had my ex-coworkers who are also good friends, over for lunch. i wore this white linen kameez, the fabric had an all over black threadwork pattern and tiny black sequins on the threadwork lines.
i had it stitched in this panelled style, which was actually much more flattering in linen as it’s very flowy, so there is a lot more movement. the neckline was a bit diff and i had pearl cluster buttons. i wore it with black wide leg pants. that was the first time they had seen me in desi wear in person and they really liked my outfit.

Re: Ladies living in Cold countries

As one of my relatives say,PJs and a t-shirt is the 'shahi libaas' to wear at home...:D...who doesn't like it...!
Just a bit,the OP asked about fabric material for winters,so I mentioned georgettes. For sure when it is scorching hot outside, you would prefer something else like lawn..!

Re: Ladies living in Cold countries

At home I'm usually in PJ's and one of his t-shirts. He's never complained. During summers when it gets super hot here (I'm in Texas)....I'll wear tank tops and shorts in the house.

Ha....yea it does get much colder up there compared to where I am. Here its just hot and humid. We get "really cold" like 7 days the entire year!

Re: Ladies living in Cold countries

@home i just wear PJ’z

This is how it is here in the winter:

and i usually just wear t-shirt, jeans, sweater.
and if it’s more than -35c then i wear snow shoes and a coat.
