Lack of desis in films outside sub-continent

don’t you think it’s strange that desis haven’t broken through acting-wise outside their own countries? For all the talk about Bollywood, desis don’t make much impact on either American or British screens - unless it is a desi theme like Monsoon wedding or East is East, which themselves are written by desis.

Why no desi version of Denzel Washington or Halle Berry? in other words making it into movies to play a character as opposed to a stereotype?

oh just give 'em some time - they'll come around.
they actually appear frequently on commercials, and goray ppl's music videos around here.
bollywood and etc are full of really good looking guy and girl models/actors ... and talent .. i'm sure they are bound making their way into the showbiz arena.

ppl here really like the way we dress don't they (bindiya, mehndi, etc..) and they've just recently been exposed to that kind of thing. and brown ppl being just as obvious .. is just a matter of time.

aphro, on the music side you're right, desis will make big inroads in the not too distant future cuz the music scene is different to acting. i think it will change eventually, but it's taking a long time! i would hate to be an actor because the parts they get are so dull and predictable.

The Game Responds:

        *It's called prejudice,sir. People,That Is All.*

It's not how you play The Game,*shmucks,it's how The Game plays you.*

Well, it is not so much prejudice as ethnic composition I think.
Think of it this way. If the tables are turned around and it is 'Desi' society that dominates the WOrld instead of the West, would any 'Gora' be justified in whining about not getting parts in Bollywood movies?

All they owuld be getting is bit parts as British Officers, right?

Other thing is Desis don't make as much sound and noise as other ethnic communities do wherever they go. Moveis come out of communities who get noticed right?

Have you guys seen Vertical Limit? This film has some desi actors including a Pakistani General

Andhra, you are looking at this from the wrong viewpoint. I am not talking about Amithab Bachan appearing in Hollywood films, i am talking about homegrown American/British desis. In Hollywood there is any amount of black actors playing various different roles. is it unreasonable to ask why desi actors haven't made a mark?

This has got nothing to do with world domination so try and look at it from the viewpoint of an asian actor who has been brought up as an American for example.

Xtreme bhai, I understand what you are saying. May be I didn't explain myself.
THere has to be valid social context behind a character.
Desis in general are good citizens. One undoubted effect is they get less noticed.
Another aspect is we don't surrender our culture to the main stream.
What I mean is, we are different from Puerto RIcans, Mexicans, Africans etc., who settle here.
The effect of all this in my opinion is that the average American on the street is not too aware of Desis or their way of life.
He decides the market for Hollywood so you have the situation with Desi actors.
Still, I wonder!!

Will Smith said in Newsweek he was turned down for John Grisham's 'runaway Jury'.

Any new thoughts on this subject?

Any suggestions?
