Re: Kuwait donates $100 million for quake victims in Pakistan

Glad to hear about the 100 Million but sad that a lot of it will never make it to the needy hands. This donation will create at least two or three millionaires in Pakistan.

Kuwait aid pours in quake-hit Pakistan as death toll increases 38,000

Kuwaiti aid Saturday started pouring in earthquake-ravaged Pakistan with tones of medicines handed over to the authorities and pledge of more donations. The Kuwait Red Crescent Society (KRCS) handed over the first consignment of 12 tones of medicines to Pakistan Red Crescent Society (PRCS). Kuwaiti ambassador to Islamabad, Faisal Al-Mulaifi, was also present on the occasion. A three-member KRCS delegation, led by Yousef Al-Merag, Disaster Management Coordinator and Emergency Coordinator, arrived here on Friday to hand over the donation. Other members of the delegation include Muhammed Hasan, Relief Coordinator, Abdul Rehman, Deputy Head of Society and Head of Public Relations. “This is just the beginning, more aid would be arriving soon”, said the envoy while talking to KUNA. “This is our commitment to the people and government of Pakistan to stand by them in their sufferings”, he added.

He said the team of KRCS during its weeklong stay will be visiting far-reaching devastated areas and assess their exact needs. He added that they would be handing over food and other relief items to the victims themselves. “They are not just here to donate but also to mingle with the destruction-stricken people”. “We had a meeting with PRCS to assess their requirements to meet the large-scale destruction”, said Yousef Al-Merag. He said another consignment of 12,000 blankets and other necessary food items will be arriving here soon. “We will also be buying necessary food items from the local market”, he added. “We are very thankful to KRCS and the people and government of Kuwait”, said Brig. Khalid Kebriya, Secretary General PRCS. He said they have not conveyed any specific request to the Kuwaiti government but would welcome any assistance from the brother Muslim country. A killer quake with 7.6 magnitude hit Pakistan on October 8th, killing over 38,000 people and wounding over 66,000 others. About 30 friendly countries have responded exuberantly to the assistance call of President General Pervez Musharraf. They have dispatched rescue teams to the devastated Pakistan-Controlled Kashmir and several northern areas

**Zakat House to build 200 houses in Pakistan – Kuwaiti official **

Kuwait’s Zakat (alms) House is to build 200 houses and a number of mosques in areas stricken by the October 8 earthquake, said head of Kuwait’s joint aid committee Bader Al-Shamroukh. Speaking to Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) on Sunday, he said Zakat House had disclosed this information in a telephone call with him and would commence the project once land is allocated by the Pakistani government, adding that he in turn contacted officials to discuss the issue. He went on to say USD 100,000 had been allocated to provide needs of those stricken by the natural disaster, saying he met with Pakistani officials to discuss providing essential services and basic needs to victims. Al-Shamroukh added that following a study of the situation, it was decided the money would be used to purchase 500 tents, 10,000 boxes of food, 10,000 heavy head covers to protect against the cold, 10,000 blankets, 2,000 Qur’an books and six cows which were slaughtered to feed people living in camps. He noted that priority must now be given to build shelters and houses for those made homeless by the earthquake, especially with the onset of winter.
