Kurd wins SCBA Elections

Kurd, one of the stalwarts behind the movement for the restoration of independent judiciary of Pakistan which brought a dictatorship down, just accomplished this feat, defeating the PPP backed candidate by a huge margin. Kurd, who is often dubbed as the sher by some, and vociferous by others is now the *new Supreme Court Bar Association President!! I hope he carries on with the same vigour as before! *

LAHORE-Pro-movement, Professional Group’s candidate Ali Ahmad Kurd has won the Supreme Court Bar Association election defeating his rival M.Zafar, being largely supported by PPP and anti-movement lawyers, with a big margin of 606 votes.
Kurd bagged 1008 votes against 402 of his rival and won the coveted post of President.
Overall picture as the counting of the votes was still in progress at some stations in the country, shows the candidates of the Professional Group leading their respective rivals with a wide margin.
In Lahore, which contributes 850 votes in the total of 1724 of the Bar all over the country, Kurd secured 548 votes against 220 by his opponent of the total 778 total votes cast at this station. In Quetta Kurd remained ahead of his rival with 48 to 18 votes, in Multan it was 34-25, in NWFP 93-23 while Zafar defeated Kurd in Bahawalpur with 23-17.
For the slot of Secretary of the Bar, Shaukat Umar Pirzada of the Professional Group, bagged 557 votes in Lahore while leading at other stations against his rival Qamar Zaman Qureshi, who secured 257 votes in Lahore.
The same trend was going on regarding the result of other candidates of this Group like Vice President, Punjab, Mian Javed Iqbal, Vice President NWFP Saeed Akhtar Khan and Vice President Muhammad Ayaz Akhan Swati.
In Sindh, Rana Suhail Akhtar has been elected Vice President of the SCBA.
Former President Lahore High Court Bar, Ahmad Awais, Hafiz Abdul Rahman Ansari, Shafqat Mahmood Chouhan, Mansab Ali Awan and MNA Ch Naseer Ahmad Bhutta have congratulated Kurd on his historic victory and stressed that under his command the lawyers’ struggle would continue more forcefully till achievement of the objectives.
In his first interaction with the media after victory, Ali Ahmad Kurd announced to speed up the movement.
He asked the govt to restore the November 2 judiciary and reinstate deposed Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry ,otherwise, the lawyers would continue struggle till the achievement of objectives.
