He may not be a talented bowler … but he is a hardworker and a honest person … and a team man

The following excerpt is written by one of our fellow members over at CricBuzz on Anil Kumble’s achieved feat. Have a read -

Anil Kumble ‘Jumbo’

It wasn’t that surprising that it was not something which was fairly addressed by the media and fans. After all who wants to really think much about bowlers whose job is to keep bowling over after over and take a wicket every ball, for we do indeed relish the exquisites 4’s and 6’s from our batting heroes. He is indeed our unsung hero with him being treated below par with many bowlers whose statistics are miles behind him. I wonder ‘why’?

Is it because he is instrumental in winning the highest no. of test matches for India.

Is it because he has bowled the highest no. of overs for India and still continues to do so.

Is it because he is the one of two bowlers to ever take all 10 wickets in an innings.

Is it because he has played far less matches than Murali to reach the stage where he is.

Or is it because he is not as flamboyant as Warne or as magical as Murali.

Or is it because he is not that big turner of the ball.

Or is it because he is not that ‘good’ a batsman.

Whatever may be the reason, Kumble has never got his share of accolades (and he deserved a whole lot of it). It’s apt that he crossed Walsh yesterday - both have quite a few similarities between them, both are tireless and relentless in their pursuit and not necessarily flashy. It is very likely that Kumble may cross Mcgrath someday and we will have the top three spots to spinners and naturally he will be compared with Warne and Murali. They both are great spinners and have done wonders for their country and have been considered so, it is high time that we Indians also get out of our psyche of idolizing batsman hitting those exquisite 4’s and 6’s and take some time off to dwell on the shinning jewel we have among us – Anil Kumble.

Re: Kumble surpasses Courtney Walsh's record of 519 Test wickets!

Only cuz he's taken 325 wickets in India!!!

Re: Kumble surpasses Courtney Walsh's record of 519 Test wickets!

I don't see any reason why overtaking Walsh be an occassion for special treatment. It is not as if he has broken the world record or anything. There are three players above him.

Re: Kumble surpasses Courtney Walsh's record of 519 Test wickets!

and i doubt that most of the players on the list have taken more than 60% of their wickets at home.

remember when he took 10 wickets, indians were saying thats world record, thats world record! idiots.

Re: Kumble surpasses Courtney Walsh's record of 519 Test wickets!

Kumble is god, Murli is not...
Kumble is the best, Warne is not... happy :)

Re: Kumble surpasses Courtney Walsh's record of 519 Test wickets!

I'd take Murali over Kumble, Warne over Kumble anyday, so would everybody in the world even most indians.

Re: Kumble surpasses Courtney Walsh's record of 519 Test wickets!

It is same as having a count down for Inzimam's 10000 run in ODI. Not that no one has done it before. But fans still like to enjoy it. :D

Re: Kumble surpasses Courtney Walsh's record of 519 Test wickets!

This is one reason I rate Kumble as the most valuebale player for India when it comes to test cricket. He has won most matches for India than any other cricketter. He is above Gavaskar, Kapil,Sachin and Dravid when it comes to winning test matches for India.

Re: Kumble surpasses Courtney Walsh’s record of 519 Test wickets!

Zaheer Khan has taken 9 wickets so far in an innings against Essex. He has taken 9-65 and aims for 10 wickets.

Zaheer aims for 10 Essex wickets

County Championship D2, Chelmsford, day two (close): Worcestershire 650-7d v Essex 186-9
India seamer Zaheer Khan claimed all nine Essex wickets to fall as the home side closed 186-9, 464 behind Worcs.
The visitors added 191 to finish with 650-7, Gareth Batty scoring only his second first-class century.
Varun Chopra and Mark Pettini shared 117 for Essex, but Zaheer came back with a stunning spell of swing.
Five balls after ousting Pettini he had Andy Flower caught at slip, then struck twice in his next over, before Andre Adams fell to the last ball of the day.
Zaheer will try to add last man Darren Gough to his collection when play resumes on Friday.
“I did start to think about taking all 10 wickets once the eighth wicket fell and it would be marvellous to achieve that, but the main thing is that Worcestershire are in a strong position,” he said.

Re: Kumble surpasses Courtney Walsh’s record of 519 Test wickets!

Zaheer misses his mark due to a dropped catch.

Zaheer misses Essex clean sweep
County Championship D2, Chelmsford, day three: Worcestershire 650-7d v Essex 283
Zaheer Khan failed in his quest to become the first Worcestershire bowler to take all 10 wickets in an innings.
The Indian pace bowler had all nine overnight with Essex 186-9 in reply to his side’s 650-7 declared.
But a dropped catch by wicket-keeper Steven Davies allowed Darren Gough to escape and cost him the clean sweep.
Ravi Bopara (67 not out) and Gough (50) took 73 runs off Zaheer’s 33 balls in the first hour before Matt Mason took the last wicket with the score on 283.
Zaheer finished with figures of 9-138, the best of his career, and Worcestershire skipper Vikram Solanki enforced the follow-on.
Richard Johnson was the last player to take all 10 wickets in an innings of a Championship match, with figures of 10-45 for Middlesex against Derbyshire in 1994.

Its another milestone on the way like 10000 run in OD is.
