Kuala Lumpur to Houston, Texas.

We are relocating to Houston Texas from KL Malaysia. I have never been to US so I am quite nervous at the moment. My husbands office will be near enclave parkway 77077. I have 2 kids aged 7(boy) and 4(girl). I am a practising Muslim and my son goes to private school here. I need advice Regarding which areas are best to live which will be near office and near schools too. Also I am confused about whether should put my kids in private or public? What is the price range for a decent 3 bedroom apartment? Plz help. !

Re: Kuala Lumpur to Houston, Texas.

Used to live in Houston.
It has one of the largest Islamic and Pakistani community in the US.
Real estate is very affordable. 3 bedroom apartment should be around $1000-$1500 depending on the location.

Sugar Land and Katy are 2 suburbs with excellent public schools. Both have considerable Islamic/Pakistani residents and have multiple mosques.
No need for private schools unless you are specifically looking for an Islamic school.
There are several private Islamic schools in the area.

Re: Kuala Lumpur to Houston, Texas.

You are going to the right place, nothing much to worry. The weather and environment is perfect for new immigrants.

I'll echo everything wut Krash has said above about Houston. For further comments lets page @us1415

Re: Kuala Lumpur to Houston, Texas.

Thanks a lot for prompt replies. living I KL I am quite worried about bullying in public schools esp if you have Pakistani passports. Are the public schools really this good that I don't need to consider private at all? And can someone tell me how much will be the commute from Sugarland or Katy as per your recommendations to my husbands work place? It's at enclave parkway 77077. Where does this area actually falls? I have absolutely no idea. Anyone from Houston please help.

Re: Kuala Lumpur to Houston, Texas.

Well first off I welcome you to Houston. I work at the same street and live in Sugar Land. I like Sugar Land since this is where my kids go to school and my family is nearby. No one here really needs to go to private school since majority of the kids are Asian. Mostly in the 40-50% range. You can also send your kids to Islamic school if you want. There is a shortage of 3 bedroom apartments and if you find them they will most likely be in the 1800-2000 range since 14-1700 is what the 2 bedrooms are going for. Katy will be near for you but I am not that familiar with Katy. If you have any other questions ask away. Right now it takes me around 20 minutes in the morning and 30-35 minutes on the way home. Will he be working for slb?

Re: Kuala Lumpur to Houston, Texas.

The good public schools are very good. Bullying should not be a problem at all since there is a lot of diversity in student population.
My kids had a great time in Sugar Land public schools (77479 area)
Katy and Sugar land are about 20-30 mins from enclave parkway.

Re: Kuala Lumpur to Houston, Texas.

@SaeedinPakistan, are you still in Houston area?

Re: Kuala Lumpur to Houston, Texas.

I read the thread but didn’t wanna comment because her husband’s workplace is 50 mins from where I live (good traffic) and I have no clue about housing costs over there or here for that matter(living at Abba’s). The West side of town, where he is going to be working, has better schools and more diversity but again I don’t have kids so can’t say much about that either.

Re: Kuala Lumpur to Houston, Texas.

Agree with above. Actually, I think 3-bedroom apartments that are nice (i.e. updated in safe areas) will most likely be $2000+/month. For that type of money, you should look into renting a home or a town home because that will give you more space.

For public schools, look into the school districts in Katy and Sugar Land to see which ones are best rated. Then look for housing in that district. Keep in mind that when you're in a district with higher rated schools, that also make the home prices/rental prices go high.

Re: Kuala Lumpur to Houston, Texas.

Thank you everyone. I Wil definitely look up for housing in Katy and Sugarland. Let's see what we end up with. Yes us1415 he is working for slb.
