We already have a sleepy organisation OIC, (I'd consider it defunct) which has slept through as the Islamic world has descended into chaos. How different can this force be? Can it stand up to internal threats like ISIS, and stand up to the US and NATO? If the answer is no, then this would be as effective as OIC.

U.S. Secretary of Defense, Ash Carter welcomed the idea of the 34– state Islamic Alliance against terrorism. During the announcement by Saudi Arabia to form this 34-state Islamic alliance Secretary Carter welcomed the initiative and said that it “appears to be very much aligned with something that we have been urging for quite some time, which is greater involvement by Sunni-Arab countries in the campaign to combat ISIL.”

He added that a Saudi-led coalition in the region would have the ability “to promote what we know is necessary in the long run for the defeat of ISIL in Iraq and in Syria. And in the long run defeating terrorism in the region would require “replacement of their [Daesh’s] tyrannical rule with local rule that gives a decent life back to people.”

According to the reports, Pakistan is also going to be part of this alliance. Few other countries have been affected by terrorism than Pakistan, and their sacrifices and battles against terrorism have been greatly acknowledged. If we want to put an end to Daesh, we need to have more global cooperation.

ISIS gets busy killing other muslims and no attacks in the west. WIN WIN!

I believe that this is the reason that Americans didn't interfere early on in 2012 (war could have been done very fast libyan style) because sunni extremists working against shiite extremists is win / win for Israel / US. Of course, the chaos is good for taking away any criticism on Israel and Israel doesn't want a terrorist hub in syria. Assad is very manageable as seen by regular israeli bombings on hezbollah convoys and taking out syrian reactor whenever these situations pop up.

I think that this is a fake alliance, invented by Saudi Arabia for domestic consumption. Since the Saudi government thinks that controls domestic news, it though that it could reassure its citizens that they are part of a big alliance (an "Ummah Military" that stands as an alternative to the ISIS concept) when no such thing exists.

I think that Saudi feels insecure that ISIS is living up the concepts taught in its own schools, and is trying to invent fake news like this to placate its citizens that you don't need a big Islamic state because all the "Muslim countries" (since the saudi definition seems to exclude the Shia majority states) are in a protective military alliance.

Hey Haroon, long time.
I agree that a cross national yet regional anti terrorism effort by muslim majority countries is not only going to be more fruitful but also lay to rest the talking points of militant idiots who try to make it some holy war.
I do hope that the efforts are not just passing resolutions, or just military action, but also curtailing activities of militant and radical groups, preachers and their supporters. The faucet has to be turned off at the source, just building dams, bailing buckets etc will indeed help but plugging the source is critical. Saudis of all should know that and be held accountable for closing that by their coalition and regional peers and international community at large.

At the end of the day, it is up to the alliance between the 34 Islamic countries to see through this initiative. It is in the interest of regional powers to work together and contain the spread of these violent extremist ideologies.
