Kosher Gelatin...

…is it ok to eat? Cuz I really feel like eating this yogurt that I got from a plant tour of Safeway…they were giving out free yogurts, but it had K. Gelatin…and I asked my other Muslim friend if K. Gelatin was ok to eat and she said yes. I avoided K. Gelatin as much as I could…but I just feel like eating yogurt so I thought I would ask some of the knowledgeable people on GS.

Re: Kosher Gelatin...

Surah Al-Maida Chapter 5 V. 3,4,5
Forbidden to you (for food) are: dead meat blood the flesh of swine and that on which hath been invoked the name of other than Allah that which hath been killed by strangling or by a violent blow or by a headlong fall or by being gored to death; that which hath been (partly) eaten by a wild animal; unless ye are able to slaughter it (in due form); that which is sacrificed on stone (altars); (forbidden) also is the division (of meat) by raffling with arrows: that is impiety. This day have those who reject faith given up all hope of your religion: yet fear them not but fear Me. This day have I perfected your religion for you completed my favor upon you and have chosen for you Islam as your religion. But if any forced by hunger with no inclination to transgression Allah is indeed Oft-Forgiving Most Merciful.
4 They ask thee what is lawful to them (as food): say: Lawful unto you are (all) things good and pure: and what ye have taught your trained hunting animals (to catch) in the manner directed to you by Allah; eat what they catch for you but pronounce the name of Allah over it: and fear Allah; for Allah is swift in taking account.
5 This day are (all) things good and pure made lawful unto you. The food of the People of the Book is lawful unto you and yours is lawful unto them. (Lawful unto you in marriage) are (not only) chaste women who are believers but chaste women among the People of the Book revealed before your time when ye give them their due dowers and desire chastity not lewdness nor secret intrigues. If anyone rejects faith fruitless is his work and in the Hereafter he will be in the ranks of those who have lost (all spiritual good).

Re: Kosher Gelatin...

Since it has Kosher Contents it is Ok to eat.

Re: Kosher Gelatin...

Yeps ... it's ok. As Br. Bookworm pointed out, there are clear instructions in the Qur'an.

Point to note here. The food of the 'people of book' has been made permissible because they were instructed to follow the same slaughtering method as Muslims. By that criterion, while Kosher can be considered lawful, Christians' present way of slaughtering is a different matter.

(Allah knows best)

Re: Kosher Gelatin...

I heard Jews don't mention God's name over each animal individualy, will it be okay to say Allah's name over it ourselves and eat?

Re: Kosher Gelatin…

Some Jews do. Jews have the same kind of internal disagreements over what constitutes kosher and Muslims do with halal - ie some Jews believe that stuff sold as “kosher” issn’t actually kosher, just as some Muslims disagree with the halal label on meat that has been slaughtered under certain conditions even with God’s name taken.

Some Jews believe that the blessing with God’s name only has to be said once at the start of the session or day of slaughter, and that then applies to all animals killed on the day.

Other Jews believe that it must be done before each animal is killed, and do so.

Re: Kosher Gelatin...

Why do you guys put urself in that position.. Just eat Halal.. btw you can find halal gelatin at any middle eastern store. I mean why would you eat kosher when halal is available.
Also isnt the Jewish blessing much different than ours.. I would just try to avoid it at all costs. I mean if its a life and death situation than its understood.

Usually, food items with (U) [stands for ‘Ultraorthodox’] are more reliable than (K) or Kosher.

Re: Kosher Gelatin...

Assalam O Alaikum

Kosher Gelatin is not Halal ingredient. The gelatin used in Kraft's Jell-O Gelatin is made from pork & beef bones and skins but it has a Kosher symbol K on the package and some liberal Kosher organization considered it as Kosher because they think the gelatin made from pork source has lost its originality and it is an unedible product. There are two other type of Kosher gelatin, the one use in all yogurts such as Dannon Yogurts and others is obtained from non Kosher slaughtered cows in China(Jhutka slaughter). This kosher gelatin is certified by a Rabbi in Florida with Kosher symbol K. There is another Kosher gelatin which is obtained from Kosher slaughtered cows but the name of Allah or God is not prounce on each cow only first and last cow. This type of Kosher gelatin is used in Entenmann products certified by Union of Orthodox with OU kosher symbol.

There is no Halal gelatin used in any US/Canadian manufactured food products except Fish gelatin which is used in Mother's Iced Oatmeal cookies available in California and Texas supermarkets and some other products. Re: Kosher Gelatin...

Re: Kosher Gelatin...

as far as i know gelatine is fat extracted from pig's bones. dat says it all.

Re: Kosher Gelatin…

What do the words in Bold mean to you guys? Do these words, taken from Quran, mean that Kosher is lawful for muslims?.., or not?

Re: Kosher Gelatin...

Assalam O Alaikum

Gelatin is not a fat but it is a protein obtained from structural protein from skins and bones. There are two type of gelatin, type A gelatin is made from pork collagen (protein)derived from pork bones and skins. Type B gelatin is also obtained from the collagen of beef bones and skins. Type A gelatin is obtained from acid treated collagen while Type B gelatin is obtained from alkali treated collagen.

Fish gelatin has lower gell strength, so it can not be use in making capsules but it can be used in food products which do not require strong gel strength.

The word pure foods is very important in the ayat, if Ahlekitab food is not pure then it can not be Halal for Muslims.

As I mentioned before the non meat Kosher certified foods must meet the Islamic sharia requirements of Halal foods, for example Grey Poupon's Dijon Mustard is Kosher certified with OU kosher symbol on the package but it is not Halal because it contains wine. So not all non meat Kosher certified food products are Halal unless they meet the Halal requirements.

Re: Kosher Gelatin…

Let’s look every thing in context.

Surah Al Ana’am: 6 ayah: 118,119, 121
:bism:

118** So eat of (meats) on which Allah’s name hath been pronounced, if ye have faith in His signs.**

119 Why should ye not eat of (meats) on which Allah’s name hath been pronounced, when He hath explained to you in detail what is forbidden to you - except under compulsion of necessity? But many do mislead (men) by their appetites unchecked by knowledge. Thy Lord knoweth best those who transgress.

121 **Eat not of (meats) on which Allah’s name hath not been pronounced: That would be impiety. But the evil ones ever inspire their friends to contend with you if ye were to obey them, ye would indeed be Pagans. **

Conclusion:

From reading in context from Surah Al Ma’idah that Food of people of book is made lawful upon us has a prerequisite according to surah Al Ana’am; that is, the animal must have been the lawful one with name of ALLAH been said unto it at the time of slaughter.

Re: Kosher Gelatin...

This is a really big controversial issue...i guess the best thing to do is call the company and ask them if you really feel like eating something.
