Four game testAuthor: Holly MacNeil/Friday, 3 March 2017/Categories: Hockey Australia News, Kookaburras

The Australian men’s hockey team, the Kookaburras, will take on Pakistan in a four-test match series in Darwin at the end of March.

The International Hockey Open will be played from 28 March to 1 April at Marrara Hockey Centre.

Sport and Recreation Executive Director Phillip Leslie said the tournament will be competitive and entertaining for locals.

“Hockey is such a fast paced and skilful sport and having the opportunity to watch world-class players in action is very exciting for anyone that loves spectator sport.

“The Northern Territory has a rich history of producing top hockey players who have gone on to represent Australia with pride and I know Darwin’s passionate hockey community will embrace the Open and the opportunity to watch the Aussie Kookaburras in action.”

Hockey Australia said the Kookaburras were looking forward to playing in Darwin and know Pakistan will bring its usual fast paced and aggressive playing style.

“It’s very exciting for us to be able to have our first games of the year on home soil, and there’s sure to be some fantastic hockey played against Pakistan, because they are always a challenging opponent,” said Kookaburras Head Coach Colin Batch.

“They will have match practice however because they’re playing New Zealand in a five test match series, so they will certainly come into this series match hardened, whereas we will be starting fresh so that will be a challenge in itself.”

The Kookaburras will also visit local schools and host clinics to help promote the sport of Hockey and improve local player skills.

The Australian coaching team will also hold an education session with local coaches.

Hockey NT CEO Ian Harkness said local players and officials are grateful for the opportunities the International Hockey Open brings.

“Exposure and access to elite players and coaching is imperative to the development of the sport locally,” he said.

The first test match on Tuesday the 28 March is scheduled during the day and Hockey NT are encouraging schools to register their interest in sending students to watch the game.

“The designated School Day approach will see the Marrara Hockey Centre open the gates for the students and supporting staff to attend the event for free of charge.

“At this stage we have had interest from as far away as Katherine and it is hoped the attendance will generate a great atmosphere for the players from both teams,” said Mr Harkness.

The Northern Territory Stingers will also play Western Australia’s Men’s Under 18 team in curtain raiser games prior to each test match.

The year’s tournament is part of a 3 year sponsorship agreement (2016-2018) with Hockey Australia and the NT Government.

Series passes and match tickets are now on sale and available from www.ntix.com.au

Jeremy Hayward 14 (PC)
Tom Wickham 44 (FG)
Matt Dawson 48 (FG)
Ben Craig 51, 53 (FG)

PAKISTAN 1 (0)
Abdul Haseem Khan 60 (FG)

The Kookaburras kicked off their first game of the year today with a huge 6 – 1 win against Pakistan at the Marrara Hockey Stadium. Kiran Arunasalam made his debut for the Kookaburras in front of over 600 enthusiastic local school children, including 20 who had travelled from as far as Katherine to attend the game.

The Kookaburras scored the first goal of the match, with Trent Mitton making a play for goal which saw the ball knocked into the net from the right of the circle giving the Australian’s the start they were after.

With only a minute to go in the first term, the Kookaburras were on for the second goal of the game by way of a penalty corner opportunity. The Aussies made a great play, with a strong injection from Tom Craig leading to a powerful flick from Darwin local Jeremy Hayward which defied Pakistan goalkeeper Mazhar Abbas to fly into the net.

The second quarter was tough for the Kookaburras, with the Pakistan defense on high alert, resulting in the score remaining at 2 – nil going into half time. The Kookaburras saw the opportunity in the third quarter, with Tom Wickham fighting back to extend the lead for the Aussies, clocking a field goal from the left of the net.

The final quarter was chock full of action, with Matt Dawson scoring a field goal at minute 48, only to be backed up by a double from new recruit Ben Craig, who scored his two field goals within minutes of one another – the second of which came from a spectacular reverse flick.

Right as the buzzer sounded on the 60th minute of play, Pakistan captain Abdul Haseem Khan scored for his team, with his field goal leaving the final score at Australia 6 – 1 Pakistan.

Kookaburras head coach Colin Batch said: “The score line was 6 – 1, but I think we have to put that into context. Pakistan made it very difficult for us for a number of quarters, the second was tough and the third we didn’t create too much but we ended up getting the third goal and that opened up the game for us.

“Overall, we were pretty consistent, so I was pleased to see that particularly in these conditions. There’s plenty to work on before tomorrow night; we had a bit of trouble coming out from the Pakistan high press so we have to look at that. We spoke about it in the game and it was better in the second half, but I would like a clearer picture of what we need to do tomorrow.”

The Kookaburras next take on Pakistan tomorrow evening at 7pm ACST at the Marrara Hockey Stadium, with tickets available through NTix

A better defeat today.

Wednesday, 29 March 2017 (Darwin, Northern Territory) - Official Hockey Australia match report from the International Hockey Open.

KOOKABURRAS 3 (2)
Tom Wickham 15 (FG)
Trent Mitton 30 (FG)
Aaron Kleinschmidt 33 (FG)

PAKISTAN 0 (0)

There was some spectacular hockey on display tonight at the Darwin International Hockey Open, with the fast-paced game giving both sides ample opportunity to score; however, it was the Kookaburras who came away with their second win of the series defeating Pakistan 3 – 0.

After a couple of missed opportunities early in the first quarter, the Kookaburras were in with an early lead thanks to a scrabble in the Australian circle resulting in a field goal for Tom Wickham.

Pakistan had an opportunity on a penalty corner early into the second quarter, before Australia’s Flynn Ogilvie and Kiran Arunasalam made a late break for goal which narrowly missed the post.

With only a minute to go before half time the Kookaburras went for it; a penalty corner narrowly missing the mark, before Trent Mitton added to the goal tally with a strike that sailed straight past Pakistan goalkeeper Amjad Ali.

Three minutes into the second half and the Kookaburras were at it again, Aaron Kleinschmidt scoring a field goal from a reverse flick, extending the Australian’s lead to 3 – 0.

Both teams continued to press going into the final quarter, but as the final buzzer sounded the score remained at 3 – 0 in Australia’s favour.

Kookaburras head coach Colin Batch said: “It was a tournament match tonight, with very tight conditions. We had to make play from a team that was camped in the back 35 so it really good practice for us going forward.

“To come away with a 3 – nil win when it wasn’t our best game and we made a lot of mistakes was fantastic. It was pleasing that there were also some good passages, and more importantly that we can learn a lot from that performance.”

The Kookaburras next take on Pakistan on Friday evening at 7pm ACST at the Marrara Hockey Stadium, with tickets available through www.Ntix.com.au

Re: Kookaburras to play Pakistan in Darwin

It is not just Australia, Holland and Germany but also teams such as Spain, Britain, Belgium, Argentina and South Korea that have improved a lot in recent times and one would back then to beat Pakistan and India 6-7 times out of 10. It is a tough competition out there. Even NZ are not bad these days.

Re: Kookaburras to play Pakistan in Darwin

It seems that Pak need to work on their defence. Whoever is coaching them is not doing a good job! Unlike cricket, the coach plays a more important role in soccer and hockey.

Re: Kookaburras to play Pakistan in Darwin

This is an extreme disappointment for me. I wont be able to see Pakistan hockey rising up again in my life time.

For the continuous humiliation of Pakistan hockey, I often urge PHF to abandon international hockey just to preserve our precious record - at the moment Pakistan’s record in terms matches won against any other team is n favour of Pakistan but it is deteriorating very fast.

Re: Kookaburras to play Pakistan in Darwin

Wish I could post pics of the games. Their coach or whoever it was did not sit down the entire game and continually supported them from the sideline. The weather was disgustingly hot on the first match. Second match was played in the evening and everyone saw a definite improvement.
Hopefuly tonight there will be stronger competiion

Re: Kookaburras to play Pakistan in Darwin

It’s not humiliating. the Australians are very supportive and understand that Pakistan does not have the sources/funding/support as other top level teams do.
And they have never dismissed Pakistan as a weak team.

Re: Kookaburras to play Pakistan in Darwin

Another defeat today but a better one again 0-2. Last match tomorrow!

Re: Kookaburras to play Pakistan in Darwin

It rained the whole match. Everyone was soaked to the bone.

Last match today at 5. Dark clouds are rolling around but we will still go.

Then the community has invited the team for dinner. They’re a nice bunch.

Re: Kookaburras to play Pakistan in Darwin

A disappointing loss again 3-5, aussies won the series 4-0!

Re: Kookaburras to play Pakistan in Darwin

I think we are lacking in both skills and stamina.

Australia are the best team in the world, so this (result) was pretty much expected

Re: Kookaburras to play Pakistan in Darwin

why r we paying cricketers so much money while hockey players get almost peanuts compared to them
the difference shows, even shahbaz senior hasn’t brought much change when all is corrupt around him
