KONY 2012: Your Perspective

With almost 68 million views on YouTube in just 6 days and celebrities taking to Twitter/FB to promote this documentary, what are YOUR thoughts on this?

If you haven’t watched it, it talks about a campaign to make Joseph Kony famous, not to celebrate him, but to rise support for his arrest and set a precedent for international justice.

I think you should make me a sammich

Re: KONY 2012: Your Perspective

On a serious note, I have seen clips of it and seen it discussed recently on Bill Maher and news and I have mixed feelings about it. It is good that people are aware of such atrocities but it seems like it's almost become a fad. I think Obama has been trying to do something about this for a couple of years now and in October 100 troops were sent to hunt this guy down. Let's hope someone gets this guy.

Re: KONY 2012: Your Perspective

this sort of stuff is quite common in africa but i dont get why this particular case is getting extra coverage

Re: KONY 2012: Your Perspective

This damned thing is like a damn wildfire in highschools. The only reason is because it’s becoming the social culture, and people are condemning him to get into the Kony Circle rather than out of the purity of their hearts.

Invisible Children has some weird controversies surrounding them, which can be easily searched for. There are some Ugandan citizens and natives who have replied saying the facts are exaggerated.

It’s a legit cause, but Invisible Children for sure has malicious intentions.

Re: KONY 2012: Your Perspective

Israel and USA have been slaughtering innocent children for ages now, I don't see anyone giving a **** about them. Watching a video on youtube does not make you a political activist. Most of the people can't even locate Uganda on the map.

Re: KONY 2012: Your Perspective

i don't give a rats a$$ about this.......

jafri said quite rightly........its just sorta social media 'cool' thing........

you won't ever see videos about iraqi children suffering genetic problems due to depleted uranium bombs thrown by the americans...........

or the cluster bombs used by americans and israelis on kids......

Re: KONY 2012: Your Perspective

Liking something on Youtube or Facebook does not make you a humanitarian or a social activist. Makes you a selfish, arrogant human being.

Re: KONY 2012: Your Perspective

I asked someone why they were wearing one of those horrible bracelets the other day. "in support of kony" was the answer I got. Some people really are that clueless!

can someone summarize it for me.i am ignorant.

Re: KONY 2012: Your Perspective

I think it's a good idea that we use social networking tools to raise awareness. I'll be honest, I hadn't heard of this Kony guy before this issue became viral. So at least people are aware now... whether that's going to help the people in Uganda or not is another story.

However, the ignorance of the developed world never ceases to amaze me... every single day, there's over 27000 children under the age of 5 dying mainly due to malnutrition... every single day, that is... so ever since that video was uploaded on youtube, 189000 children have died and nobody gives a damn, nobody is going to go feed those kids because we're all too busy tweeting... ughh this thread has made me so mad! -_- Get your priorities right, people... and contribute more than a facebook like!!

PS: I'm not saying this issue isn't important. Of course it is and it needs to be addressed. But why isn't there similar if not more publicity surrounding bigger issues that need to be addressed more urgently, I just don't understand.

KONY 2012: Your Perspective

I understand that they are totally disregarding the zulm on palestinians, iraqis and so many all over middle east and diff parts of the world but cruelty and zulm is wrong anywhere and everywhere. If this issue is raising awareness and making people be more actively involved then maybe just maybe those other horrendous things happening on a daily basis in middle east wagera might get some limelight or someone might get inspired and spark a change to address and be a voice for those victims.

Re: KONY 2012: Your Perspective

I was wary of it as soon as i saw the video - how the main guy was SUCH a drama queen and getting his kid involved who probably didn't even know half the stuff his dad was saying. It's impressive how aware of kony the world is but whats gonna happen now? Like kony has been doing all this for the past 20 years, so why is it so important in this year? could it be that the elections are on in America? Or that they've found oil in uganda? one thing for sure is that America isn't helping out Uganda because of the things happening. One thing that annoys me about things like this that once its off FB timeline or not trending on twitter people have forgotten about it.

Re: KONY 2012: Your Perspective

Well the minute oil is found in uganda, you can rest assure that the usa will be in uganda to "stop kony"

Re: KONY 2012: Your Perspective

I actually feel bad for the guy and how the documentary turned very negative (but I think we all agree WHY it turned negative). But this makes me think, what WOULD it actually take for normal people like us to made a difference in a community. Not in this particular case, but just in general.

Like above there are comments like "there are children dying in other place, why don't we care about them." But my question is, than exactly at which cause do we get excited and be ready to do something?

If someone is trying to make a difference, we as a viewer, are very quick to point out the 1000s of other world problems that should be taken care of, yet do nothing. But this way we are only pointing out these 1000s of world problems, but are not actually solving them.

Again, not Kony in particular, but there are so many issues going on in Africa which we have become almost immune too, because it's been going on for so long. So is this because each issue which is brought to the attention of the world gets more negative criticism because we expect it to have some conspiracy theory behind it?

Thoughts?
