Kohli and Amir- some refreshing Indo Pak sportsmanship

Keeping aside all political issues between India-Pak games I found it refreshing how Virat Kohli and Amir interacted during the match. Virat’s seems to be much mature then before. He praised Amir before the match, during the match when he was batting and credited him in his post man of the match interview. I think many Indians and Pakistanis who take the game to be more than a game can learn from this interaction on how to not judge, and see an India-Pakistan game just like any other game.

The Board Of Control For Cricket In India

If only all Indians and Pakistanis interacted like Amir/Kohli. Before the game he appreciated Amir’s determination and hard work getting back into playing cricket. While playing on the field he complimented Amir’s bowling and after the match and in the interview gave him credit for his fierce bowling.
“He is a very skillful bowler and I wish him all the best. He worked hard to come this far and it takes a lot of courage,” before the match against Pakistan.
“I would like to compliment Mohammad Amir for his spell. I actually congratulated him while I was batting. I was so happy to play that kind of a spell. He’s a world-class bowler. Hats off to the way he bowled and God bless him with more success.”
“It’s better not to think of different teams differently otherwise you create perceptions and then your game sort of molds towards those perceptions. It is better to stay blank and treat every bowler the same.”
I think the last few sentences in this interview is something we can all learn from. Many of us have perceptions of people from the other side from media/society instead of taking each others to be individuals. Especially the media/talk shows place unnecessary focus on this one game.
It became a high pressure game not because it was an India vs Pakistan game but because Amir had done so well to get 3 wickets for 8 runs and India was left to rebuild the innings. I noticed more positivity from Indian/Pakistani cricket fans after this match then usual India vs Pak games. *smile emoticon

Re: Kohli and Amir- some refreshing Indo Pak sportsmanship

kohli surprised all of us as well. that was some sportsmanship from him and yes, we did not expect it from him as he is a bit arrogant but i always thought it is not his arrogance, it is his ultimate desire to win. he hates defeats like anything.

anyway, looks like he is getting mature with time. india is lucky to have him. good for you guys, He has alone won india so many games, more than tendulkar and dravid combined (and i am serious) that it is hard to remember. real match winner.

Re: Kohli and Amir- some refreshing Indo Pak sportsmanship

along the same lines, i found this post today which is also refreshing.

how i wish, india and pakistan become 2 peaceful countries with citizens traveling freely. like 2 brothers always supporting each other.

Re: Kohli and Amir- some refreshing Indo Pak sportsmanship

I think it is his youthful enthusiasm coming across as arrogance. When he was playing in Australia in his early days he used to silence crowd with his fingers when they booed him and now he says that motivates him to play better. I think he is maturing and positioning himself to be the next captain. The Virat Kohli fan from Pakistan could have also softened him. :P :)

India is unreliable out of subcontinent and sometimes even then he scores they don't win but hoping for the best in future world cups. After 8 years they actually won games in Australia. Pakistan bounced back well in the last game and have been a bit unlucky with umpiring decisions.

I think his positive mindset and changing tactics based on the game is something which helps him. The India-Pak media have many talk shows and over hype the Indo-Pak game when all Indian or Pakistani players should see it like Virat just as another game with the same white ball. I

I saw this as well. Really refreshing news. I hope that this happens and hopefully sometime in the future a series can happen like it did in 2004-05/2005-06.

  • Great aggressive bowling by Amir, just as I thought the match was completely over in Pakistan’s innings. Great game, hope Pakistan reaches final . Would like to see a dreadful fast bowling attacks to face the formidable Indian batting .
