Knowing Multiple Languages!

Re: Knowing Multiple Languages!

Are you from India? Speak in Punjabi man don't need to learn URDU ,Punjabi is your language full stop.

This only happen in Pakistan , no where else why? I went to Saudia, I saw people speaking Saraiki, Punjabi not a big deal but a problem in Pakistan. I dislike this thing , due to this I dislike Urdu language, nothing comes before my culture and my language Saraiki. I absolutely love my mother tongue. :)

Re: Knowing Multiple Languages!

I think learning a foreign language also provides new employment opportunities. There are more opportunities for people who are bilingual.

Similarly, you also have a lot of opportunities in the service industry as well. Call centers are always actively looking for people who can speak two languages. This means that if you are a student and are looking for a part time job to earn a few dollars more, learning another language can definitely help you gain a competitive edge over other looking for the same job. Apart from that, preference is given to doctors, nurses and pharmacists who can speak more than one language. It helps to build trust and loyalty of the patients as well. It means better diagnosis and better communication between the medical staff and the patient. Overall the companies or other professional fields prefer those who can speak at least one foreign language.

Learning a second language also acts as an added benefit if you tend to travel a lot to foreign countries. For example, if you speak Spanish well, you get an added advantage while travelling to Latin countries or if you speak Hindi then you get advantage in Middle East or Asian sub-continent. Be it business, sales or service knowing another language definitely helps in improving, customer, client or patient relationship.

Business people get so much advantage of knowing multiple languages.

Re: Knowing Multiple Languages!

Urdu speaking people don't hate other languages. Its the psychological problem of the people who feel low, while speaking their mother tongues. Here in Karachi, there is no signs that speaking urdu is the patriotism and speaking Sindhi and other languages is something against 2 nations' theory, but in Punjab (Lahore specially), such mindset exist.

Re: Knowing Multiple Languages!

@Lili
Dadu is from Rawalpindi, Dadi from Jalandhar. Dad was born in Bangalore. I'm from US. Oh I do. That's why all my friends are Punjabis hahahaha. And the fun thing is, most of them are lahoris! My Pakistani friends like Punjabi more than my Indian friends! I tried talking to one of my Lahori friends in Urdu once and he was like, son, what are you doing? Our language is Punjabi, NOT urdu! hahaa.

Re: Knowing Multiple Languages!

Inferiority complex like Muqawwee mentioned, people especially the educated ones in Urban Punjab prefer to speak Urdu language. Punjabi language is equated with ‘uneducated’ people and the people speaking the language are considered ‘paindu’ (like jaahil ganwar). Even if some one is from a village does not make him lower than a urban fellow or does it? If some one sees a modern educated female speaking Seraiki in a market like Liberty, if nothing they will think… :hmmm: people even those who speak Urdu with difficulty will prefer to speak that language over their own, its sad but its a reality…

Re: Knowing Multiple Languages!

@Ali Bhai
Yep. My Indian Punjabi friends prefer to speak in Hindi. Even my dad is like that. My Bhua is like that also. The elder folk prefer to speak in Punjabi I think. Like I always talk with my chacha's mom in Punjabi only.

Re: Knowing Multiple Languages!

But Urdu people do look down at you , now they prefer speaking English, next level man. :smack:
No one wants to feel down themselves but others make them do. I have never been to KHI so don’t know but it happens in LHR. Probably because Sindhi , Sraiki, Pashtun people come from under developed areas that’s why it happens whereas people are well educated in lhr, khi.

There you go, he showed you the way, told you the identity.
I like Indian’s punjabi more than Pakistanis. Sikhs speak the pure language.

Re: Knowing Multiple Languages!

nearly a decade ago few killings took place near my village...

a truck driver and his truck cleaner and one other person were killed at night.. and the murders ran away with truck...

after few day police arrested them..killers were in their early twenties...the gang was north indian but they were fluent in tamil ,telugu and few other languages...:D

BTW Ho chi minh was fluent in 15 or 16 languages...

Re: Knowing Multiple Languages!

Hahahaha Ninja. My Dad's friend is like that. He knows all these languages fluently. He's a tamil fellow, and sometimes he just starts talking in Arabic (He grew up in Morocco) or French or Spanish. It's funny when he tries to speak Hindi though. He speaks it with that madarasi Hindi accent like they have in Hyderabad hahaha.

Re: Knowing Multiple Languages!

Are you taking about Indian Sikhs or Hindu punjabis? As I have seen only Sikhs upholding punjabi language, Muslims prefer Urdu and Hindus prefer Hindi at the expense of punjabi. The issue we are having in urban Punjab is that the elder generation speaks punjabi where as the younger generation is Urdu speaking. None of my cousins (including myself) speak punjabi and the situation will deteriorate with the passage of time.

Re: Knowing Multiple Languages!

In my personal experience, the super religious sikhs or the farmer/rural type people are keeping Punjabi alive. This includes all religions, Hindu, Sikh, Muslim. But a lot of the newer generation are being educated in Hindi or English and they prefer to use those over Punjabi. I actually find a lot of Pakistani Punjabis who are into keeping maa boli alive and when they get a chance to speak their mother tongue, they really seize it. It seems like nowadays, we have pockets of us Punjabis in the west/abroad who are interested in helping the language move into the modern age and grow and stay alive with time.

I'm actually seeking out such people, and joining up with intellectuals in Punjab (Indian and Pakistani) to create resources for learning Punjabi and Punjabi Dialects, using the internet to our advantage.

Re: Knowing Multiple Languages!

If you speak Urdu in bigger cities like Lahore you look cool. The medium of instruction in schools and colleges is all Urdu, thats the language that you speak in offices etc. Punjabi is thought to be a backward language. It has two effects, the people speaking Urdu look down upon those speaking Punjabi and the same guy when he goes to a village the people over there give him more importance as a shehri baoo :smack: anyways this thinking will need to change at some stage otherwise Punjabi will face a lot of problems within Pakistan.

Re: Knowing Multiple Languages!

Thats the same in Pakistan as well, Punjabi and Urdu are becoming like Rural/Urban divide. Rural areas speak Punjabi, Urban Areas (Urdu and uneducated people usually speak Punjabi). There is no official patronage to the language hence its looked down upon, its good if people outside the country are trying to keep it alive.

Re: Knowing Multiple Languages!

urdu is awesome

Re: Knowing Multiple Languages!

chacha's Mom = Dadi :) nahi?

Re: Knowing Multiple Languages!

and that so called educated class never supported Urdu too. They send their children in missionary schools and talking Urdu is a taboo in their circles. So Urdu is in itself in trouble here in Pakistan. One of our teacher used to say that a sign of dying language is that the language is only spoken by old people in its original form with muhawraat. Today, we don’t have many people who can speak Urdu without mixing sentences of English in it. Look at the TV dramas scripts in 80s and 90s and today’s production and you will know that Urdu is losing its vocabulary to English.

Re: Knowing Multiple Languages!

Sonia rehman came in Marina's morning and narrated a story of parents who wants their children to learn urdu only to communicate with their drivers
