I think it may be a combination of both...Intellect and Meditation. I feel its very important to use our natural instincts to communicate with our Creator.

Intellect and theology are theory.
Passion and meditation are spiritual.
I go with spiritual. Theory is better suited for studying mathematics, sciences and such.

The former cannot truly exist without the latter, and vice versa. They are like an intricately woven lattice, with fine fibres and strands, but together, form the most powerful force, protection and understanding, alhamdulillah.

We all have to find our own answers.
If you want to "feel" connected to HIM, then thats a personal choice - you may have to go spiritual way.
my personal take: Islam came for a reason (which is NOT to just to tell us to Pray for HIM). You learn the reason and you approach it logically and with reasoning :)
