Since I am busy doing up my house , I have been doing endless rounds to the stores to look at kitchens and in several places I was told that the wood style shaker kitchens are totally out of fashion and will soon diminish from the market !
The new look is the gloss kitchen ! .. and mind you , its definitely one hawt looking kitchen
And I was told that black gloss kitchens are the latest trend … with red or pink glass splashbacks
And I was told , aubergine is the future color , that is going to catch most people’s fancy ..
now i have no clue as to how true this all is .. jsut thought I will try and find out what you guys know about the modern kitchens and what style and colour combo your current kitchen is … thoughts?
i like the sleek, stainless steel look for a kitchen. i'm not into country look.
i however would not want to date my kitchen. so i probably won't go for colors that will look old in just another 5-10 years. so i'd be very careful picking things that can't be changed easily. however, i've found glass tiles as backsplash to be very enduring, cheap and just downright pretty
glass is the new trend in tiles. instead of ceramic, glass is used. it gives a little bit of ummm see-through quality, but ofcourse it isn’t because the glass is colores as well as sometimes has opaque backing to it. it’s used a LOT in bathrooms and kitchens as wall stuff.
this is an example of glass tiles. as you can see it isn’t exactly through and through opaque like traditional tile, yet it has some iridescence to it.
I don't think shaker style kitchens will ever totally diminish from the market, there are always going to be people wanting a more traditional style especially those with older style properties. Gloss kitchens look nice but the thing with anything 'on trend' is that it looks dated very quickly (which is why I am now stuck with hating my stainless steel kitchen :( ) and it's an expensive room to update.
Which leads back to why classic styles like shaker style kitchens will never go 'out' of fashion.
If I could have my kitchen re-done I'd opt for white gloss. White as it looks crisp and clean and other colours can make a room look smaller, so also think carefully about the dimensions of your room, how much sunlight it gets etc.

Stainless steel has been the material of choice for professional kitchen applications for years now. It’s also fast becoming a popular backsplash material due to its durability and sharp appearance. Stainless steel is a very durable material in any capacity. However, it works extremely well as a backsplash because it doesn’t receive the wear and tear that countertops would.
We have a pure white kitchen. Not recommended. It's a pain to keep it spotless with the amount of cooking we do. Haldi makes Mr.Muscle work extra hard.
I'm not too fussed about the type of kitchen, I do want an aga though.
I’ve recently done up my kitchen and went for a combination of black and chrome finishes. The colours you mention sound a bit out there but some people like them I guess, just like I do with what I chose for mine.
This thread was started more than a year ago! So, Aimee have you got your new kitchen?
Gloss is very much the done thing now. I think especially for us desis it is ideal because we cook oily foods and the gloss is a LOT easier to clean than wooden cabinets.
two things to keep in mind, especially since it can be a large investment to redo a kitchen
1) are you going to be happy with it long term, lets say 5-10 years? if the trend passes in a few years and makes your kitchen looks dated would you be willing and able to rip it all out?
2) if you are not planning to live in your home for life, what are the desired styles now, what are the desired styles in general? If I had to buy a house with a dated kitchen or something not to my liking, it would reflect in my offer price
as far as other things, glass backsplashes have been around for a bit and become fairly mainstream.
going with real wood cabinets in a wood type and stain of choice can work, the framing, hardware and lighting and backsplash etc can change the way the overall room looks and feels, and changing these is not very hard or that expensive.
A frameless or preferably one with less ornate framing ..straighter lines would be most versatile in terms of making it look modern or traditional depending on backsplash, hardware and lighting. stay with solid surface countertops, they have staying power, things like stainless steel or butcher block countertops may come and go and could be a downside for resale purposes.

what are people doing with wood cabinets that they have to clean them so much?
run a good exhaust, wipe down the cabinets once every couple of weeks and it should be okay
I have maple cabinets for the last 7.5 years, even when neglected, a decent wood cleaner and a microfibre cloth cleans them quickly and easily
Oh I don't mean wood is out of fashion, it will always stay timeless! But since the last 4 or 5 years gloss has pretty much become mainstream also (atleast in the UK). Apart from cleaning, the other advantage is that the reflective surface bounces back light making the kitchen nice and bright! As you can understand this matters a lot in the dull rainy UK where kitchens might not be as big or bright! :)
Oh I agree completely, In my parents home in dull gloomy england, we managed that by having fairly reflective granite countertops, glass front wood cabinets (the insides have to stay organized though) which seems to be a big problem in some cases.
glossy comes and goes, this is not the first time it has become popular. The resale value impact of it will not be today but 4-5 years down the road.
One key thing to keep in mind is that with some of the more modern designs the look and feel has to be maintained for aesthetics. it is usually more of a streamlined, minimalist look..try putting that in some cramped kitchen with a bunch of things hanging out on the counters and the result is a franken-kitchen.
lighting is important, general lighting, task lighting and accent lighting will give you the illumination as well as the glow to make it a bright, useful and warm environment.
