Kids these days

Do you think kids these days are reading lesser books than we did? OK I know some of us are way older :halo: but what are the trends today?

I remember getting books as birthday presents not just from my parents but even uncles and aunties. Now it’s just toys and clothes :hmmm:

Re: Kids these days

Yes, this Internet, while it offers great benefits, has taken time away from books.

Re: Kids these days

excellent topic, Niksik. children are supposed tyo read a lot so that they could develop a love for book reading.

one thing that can be done, is that we buy and make available more books to children & more importantly read the books to them.

have children join a book club at a mosque center or take them to barnes & noble, children's section.

it has to be done in a way that instrinsic liking for books develops in the young learner's hearts and minds. maybe , familiarize them to the different writing genres & styles of authors and illustrations in the books.

finally, have them write their own little book, a diary or a journal. they would feel really proud of themselves.

Great points Dush.

My daughters are very fond of books because my husband and I read before going to bed and they like to copy us.... but that has created a habit for them.

Re: Kids these days

Well all my little cousins and my sister love reading books, and are always reading :halo: And are always asking me to read to them too :smack:

Lekin I agree to an extent that kids are kind of ‘growing up’ too quickly… like they wanna do stuff like go on the internet, and I’m like noooo!! But when I was a kid (like a smaller kid than I am now :D) I used to read a lot more… gosh, I loved reading books. Still do :hmmm:

Re: Kids these days

no nikki aapa i still read books :LB:

Re: Kids these days

My children are not old enough to read yet but they like looking at books and talking about pictures and I read to them like 4 times a day and when I'm not reading they listen to audio books on CD player.
But in order to instill the love for reading in children you have to limit watching TV.

I dont think that they read as much as we did. these day even the teachers take homework researched on the net rather then encouraging a visit to a library. i know my kids are allowed to use online sites in bibliography for a term paper. but the kids do read tho until they are in elementary school. you are thought of as a nerd if you read too much. and no one wants 2 b a nerd
