Kids: Fame and Fortune

What are your views on kids starting a career at a young age?

This thread doesn’t have to focus on celebrity kids only. For example, there is a 7 yr old kid (i can’t remember his name) who is an amazing painter and his paintings are sold like crazy in art exhibitions.. This type of “career” might not affect the child’s education so much but it still plays a role in his/her upbringing… like i just feel that allowing children to get a taste of the real world takes away from them the innocence of childhood…

your views?

Child slavery.

Re: Kids: Fame and Fortune

What about the ban on Paakistani and Afghani rugs...they are disallowed by the G8 due to child labor. When a child in the west becomes a member of the arts community and earns money, there are VERY strict guidelines...they cannot work more than 4 hours a day, they must be provided with tutors so that they do not ffall behind classmates in their schoolwork, they must put their earnings into a trust fund etc. Are children workers in Pak provided these protections?

I cant say whether children working is bad or not. Mine have not. My sister was a child model when my brother and I went to school. She madean incredibly famous commercial, got the proceeds which paid for her first 2 years in college and had that experience which had no bad effects. So I cant say its bad, cant say its great either...it depends on the kid, the parents and how they handle it.

Nope. The kids there are treated as slaves, given close to no money at all and physically abused all the time. Same goes with India, China, Thailand and other places. I once did a paper on child labor, found out some sick and disgusting facts that a mother would take a life over to save those children.

Back on topic, I think as long as the child is given his/her rights (education..etc) and all his 'income' is given to sane parent(s), he/she should be allowed to pursue his 'career'.

it's all about money. If a kid makes a lot of money doing work then he is a star. If he doesn't earn enough then he is a slave without a childhood.

hmmmmm

i wasn't really talking about child slavery, guys

thats a whole different story

and child labour is again different to slavery

Re: Kids: Fame and Fortune

^exactly. i was gonna say. ur talking about children having real "careers" and fame and fortune. nothing else.

Re: Kids: Fame and Fortune

gerber babies/baby modelling I think is okay.....and that money should be put away for the child's future (then again I think all the money a kid gets should be put away for their future.....not into parents' pockets but whatevs).

Anything farther like pageants/movies/tv shows..no way. Do you realize what happens to these kids? Not sure if it applies now, but child stars from the 70s and 80s, almost all of them led very miserable lives as adults, doing drugs, failure etc. none of this is a secret...and yet parents today still want to put their child through this. I call it bad parenting.
