Kids Crafts

Currently, I am working at a Nursing home for physically and mentally handicapped children and now I have to come up with some activities for monday nite that will last for two hours.. we can do crafts, games, or anything else…I was thinking about some sortf of crafts that has something to do with fall or season in general but I don’t know what we can possibly do.. Suggest me some ideas but keep in mind that those kids can only hold some paint brushes and love loud music/games with lots of running around or so…

we have pretty much done all activities that we could think of like name tags, tie-dye socks, bean bag buddies, hallway Bowling, floor hockey, juice can puppets, and little parachute thingy for kids.

I need some brilliant ideas with crafts or so that these kids can be part of and not only us doing everything for them.

oh by the way, our budget is only ten dollars per nite, but then we have plenty of stuff already like colorful markers, scissors, multicolored glue, clay etc.

Brainstorm some ideas and bring them here.. PLEASE!

I have an absoluty brilliant idea for this..but i dnt have time to post now, il get bak to u after iftari chick...

Leaves!! Take plain white paper and cut out leaf shapes....give each of the kids a leaf-shaped paper and let them paint it all fall colors....

If you have enough money to get fancy, you could "laminate" the leaves for each of the kids to send home and it will keep forever. Just 2 sheets of clear sticky paper per leaf will do it.

Happy fall!

Re: Kids Crafts

ok..here goes..its not the most original of ideas but a few teachers i know have done something like this…

So in the Autumn theres going to be a lot of leaves..if uv got trees and stuff outsidfe ur nursing home, see if you can get the children to pick out leaves for themselves..if possible i think the children should pick their own leaves as it gives them ownership..therefore they are more likey to enjoy the activity..

ok …u can do millions of stuff with leaves, but i think working with children with disabilities it needs to be fun and hands on…

u could do printing, and making displays with all the different colours and textures of leaves…

theres so much u could do…iv just googled it and there are a fair few webcites which cover things like this..they give u a range of activities u could do.

Damn..ur gona have soo much fun..i cant wait to qualify and plan lesson for my kids!!

have fun chick :flower1:

Thank you so much..

Unfortunately, the kids that I work with are severely disabled children in wheelchairs, most of them are non-verbal, and some of them can't see.. but still they acknowledge our presence there and thats what makes them smile, which we value alot. :-)

To be honest, those kids don't understand what they are doing but they definitely love the attention and do respond sometimes by a blink of an eye, a smile, or just by holding a hand, thus making a difference in our life.

I guess, we are gonna do the leaf shape painting for a while and then play some games together..we get $10 budget per night for activities, but I 'll try if I could adjust something since I loved the laminating idea as well.. Thanx alot.

Iv worked with children with severe physical difficulties aswell, and the one thing i learnt..the hard way..was never to underestimate their abilties to understand....

^ thats exactly what my point was, but its just that I couldn't put it in better words than yours.. To be honest, I dun even see their disability as a problem but recognize it as an attribute... Anywayz, we always try not to be a "professional" but a person who can listen and doesn't take their struggle away from them by trying to make it better.. in a nutshell, we dun work ON them but work WITH them, and thats what makes a difference. :-)

At the end of the day..they are children first..even with adults with disabilties..iv always put the person first then i see the difficulty/disabilty.

Im quite touchy on this subject as it angers me when people without disabilites think they have much more worth and value in life than people with disabilities

I love it when i hear about people who work with children/adults with disabilities...

Inshallah, when i become i qualified teacher, i would intergrate all my children together...SEN, EAL all of them...children will always be children first.

I feel im gona go off the point ..so il stop ...

Good Luck with ur class...hope it goes well and ur kids have fun
