IMHO No it's not a exam, it's rather a playground, where somebody big enough will bully you and say it's the test of your faith. We are just playthings for that unseen hand of nature.

Regarding preparation, I really am not bothered at all. If there is God and if he is just as they say then I have no reason to be afraid.

i'd say it is a test, test for believers and non believers equally. those who struggle and try will inshAllah be rewarded.
