Khawateen Digest: Golden Rules

  1. To be a heroine, you have to lose one or both of your parents at some point or another in the story, otherwise, how will your evil rishtedaar mistreat you?
  2. If the heroine is unmarried, the bhabi is pure evil, makes her do all the household chores. Also she takes all your salary from your whatever low paid job you are doing. However, if the heroine is married, then the roles are reversed. She has to do all household chores alone, never gets any help or praise from anyone. And the kaamchor nand will not even lift a finger, but order ‘poor bhabhi’ around to fulfill her farmaishain.
  3. Hero and heroine must have an unusual, exotic sounding name. Bonus points, if none of the readers can guess what it means or how it is pronounced!
  4. The heroine can cook pulao, roast, shami kebaab, qorma and 2 sweet dishes all in the span of one hour! And even if they are shown as very poor, they never serve less than 7 dishes to their guests.
  5. The hero has to a ‘amreeka palat’, or at least been to U.K. for education etc. Some lower status heroes also come from the Middle East.
  6. Of course it is a given that in any joint family, it’s the heroine and her family who have to do all the household chores and are essentially treated like servants. While her cousins will always be very ‘modern’ and wearing stylish clothes. All the other cousins and their mothers exert all their efforts to entice the hero. But of course, it’s always our ‘seedhi saadi’ heroine, who always manages to win this Amreeka palat prince charming’s heart.
  7. If the story is about a large joint family (and most of them are) even then it’s always easy to spot who the real hero is: the one who is most sarial, never smiles, insults all females in the household, everyone in the household is in awe of him etc. etc.

I could go on forever and ever and ever. Yes, I do read them fairly regularly, but no I don’t think they are of good qulity (from a literary point of view). What I hate most about them is how they are always advocating that ‘suffering is noble’, or that ‘men are like that and it’s always woman who has to compromise’. Yeah right:hoonh:

Re: Khwateen Digest

Were these points also form part of novels like ‘Man o Salwa’ and ‘Humsafar’, which were also published in Khwateen Digest.

Man-o- Salwan got very common name of heroine Zainab :hmmm:

Re: Khwateen Digest

If you ask for my honest opinon, almost all the writers in the digest are mediocre at best. Yes, that includes everyone's favourite Umera Ahmad as well. I have read a lot of her short stories and novels, but they are written very poorly. Yet, most of them are very popular and became huge hits as t.v. serials. I don't believe that popularity necessarily means quality. I have to say one thing though, her characters are very strong, though 'psychotic' and extremist. They are either very good and pure, or else pure evil.

I think that's another point that I should have mentioned, in a Khawateen Digest (or for that matter any digest of that type) everything and everyone is black and white. Those who are good are very, very good, and those who are bad are rotten. (Like that old nursery rhyme):)

Re: Khwateen Digest

Yes Umera is quite repetitive in her themes and story telling techniques. She always uses flash backs in her stories be in MZZB, La hasil, etc. I even found her Peer e Kamil an average work.

Re: Khwateen Digest

Ummmm low standard? Wo kesey?
As per my knowledge all urdu laddies digest have novels, cooking recipes, beauty tips, and shairo shayari :hmmm:

Re: Khwateen Digest

low standard mean from the perspective of big writers as I mentioned in first post.

Re: Khwateen Digest

He is right, many digests writers are same, but I like shua coz it has single episode stories/novel.coz I hate to wait for nxt month for half of the story.
